It means they can read your meter without a dude walking up to your house. Everybody will have these eventually. As far as I'm concerned it's a good thing. they know how much you're using with or without the smart meter.

regarding the premise visit, I have no clue if they will need to come inside your home. I would only be concerned if your breaker panel is in the same room as your plants.

I just read that they see how much energy your using and can actually cut the usage. So I think your screwed.
But anyone that has anymore info. please post it.

Well how big is your grow? I have 700w on 24/7 right now and 400w on 12/12, and when I go on my power company's website and look at the graphs of my power usage, it's about 10% below the 'average usage of similar homes' usage. The smart meter is kinda cool really, I can see my usage patterns down to the hour on given days. looks totally random too.

Well if your under then I say that your fine. They shouldn't notice a thing unless your way over the average.

Only slightly off-topic, it opened my eyes a bit to my power consumption. Last year I was just slightly over the average home line on the graphs. I went around my house and replaced every incandescent bulb with CFLs of the lowest wattage that would make the room comfortable. My living room had 4 40w bulbs in the ceiling fan. replaced with 4 9w CFls and is actually seems a bit brighter at 100w less usage. Now I'm under average, and like that I can see what the power co sees.

No worries bro. Mine was installed last summer. All they do is install a new digital meter with no need to enter your household, not in my case anyway. And don't worry about them monitoring your electricity use, man. They WANT you to use more, they want your money. The only time they will question anything is if they suspect you are stealing power. Smoke easy, Bro :D

no worries. as long as you pay your bill on time, theyll love you. as for the meter, theyll come by, knock on your door to tell you theyre turnin of the power, and switch meters. takes em less than 5 mins. if youre not home when they do it, youll just notice your clocks flashing 12:00.

I would just pretend i'm not home like I do with all the power guys. They will just leave a note on the door telling what they did.

Hi all thanks for all the replys its put my mind to rest on this subject.i dont think i need to worry anymore.i only run 1000watt veg tent and a 600watt flower tent so all should be good i hope my meter is out side anyway.happy smoking

Why? I have this situation and they will be coming to my house, outside only, to install this "smart meter".

What could happen? Surge? Fire? I have a Supply panel and breaker box in my room.

Yup, had mine done last year also because my old meter got damaged. Take them a few minutes and I barely noticed they were here.

Usually I think RIU memebers are smart, but most people comments here makes me think some of you may have smoked yourself retarded. One of the major reasons they are installing these meters, other than to replace human jobs, is to make money by selling information on grow operations to the police and "authorities". The whole point of these meters is to bust your grow. But there is hope, if you own the property you can refuse the installation in writing and refuse consent and they will leave the old one.... for now...but eventually if you want power you HAVE to do this. By the way it is also likely to give your children birth defects with the electromagnetic radiation according to canada's top scientists, so be prepared for birth defects and jail time.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news.. this whole thing has inspired me to go the legal route and get the Dr approval. Right now if I go to my doctor I am allowed methamphetamines for ADD and morphine for pain, but cannabis, nay, that is the herb of the devil!

For someone that just said most of these people smoked themselves retarded, you sure are wearing a bright and shiny foil hat there buddy. What's next? 9/11 was an inside job so that the government can tax us more, steal our guns, and create death panels? Area 51 secretly houses Big Foot, The Lochness Monster, and The Chupacabra? You probably need to put the pot down since you're obviously way to paranoid.

Without the smartmeter they can tell how much you used in total over the month. With the smartmeter they can tell how much electricity you use on a real time second-by-second basis. The Electric company can then use that information to try to figure out what appliances you use and suggest ways that they estimate can save on your electricity bill.
If your electric company is government run and you have a few thousand watts on a solid 12/12 schedule, 365 days a year I understand why you would be nervous.
