DrJ, just post what you have in mind for your grow set-up, if someone see's a problem I'm sure they will let you know, once you have a grow goin' then you can link what's happening.
Sounds good thanks WS!,

So here's what i've got, and what I'm planning to do with it:

Genetics: NorthernBerry (peakseedsbc), Headband (from a headband grow my buddy did, stressed her to point of hermie) and Lemon Haze.

Nutrients: I have Earth Juice Grow, Bloom, Microblast, and Catalyst; I also have molasses, dolomite lime, epsom salt, and am willing to purchase cal/mag. But, i'm going to be trying an OC+ grow (osmocote plus, crf). I'm also willing to brew some organic teas throughout the grow.

Lights: I have 3 4x4' T5s rigged out with what I call an abbreviated PAR set-up (thanks lucius vorenus wherever you are!), a 90w UFO led (cheap Chinese version from ebay but works pretty well for seedlings) and plenty of cfls for supplemental side lighting.

Ventilation: your avg. fans for circulating inside the tent but my last DIY vent fan finally crapped out so i'll be buying one.

Substrate: this time, 100% perlite, but I do have some FFHF and FFOF, and vermiculite.

Grow style: the docbud hempy bucket: mini-hempy cups for germinating (100% perlite at bottom of party cup, hole about 1.5 inches from bottom, then filled with 50:50 Perlite:FFOF, then top 1/2-1 inch straight FFOF for darkness)-->6 or 7 sets of leaves-->transplant to final 5 gallon home.

Water: my city tap, TA = 38, avg TA range = 29-48, avg. pH = 8.1, avg pH range 7.2 - 8.5, Ca = 7.46ppm, avg. Ca range = 4.81-9.62...I will be pHing the water to 6.3 with EJ organic ph down (citric acid crystals)...any teas or any earthjuice will be aerated for 24-36 hrs before application; I also have some liquid humic acid if I need to treat my water for chloramines but <3ppm shouldn't be a problem.

Scenario: 1 4'x2'x6' grow tent, insulated storage closet connected to my garage. I also have a 2'x3'x5' tent, and an attic space. I'm able to control RH and Temps pretty decently but I still will get some drops into the 50s during lights out on particularly cold days. temps generally range between 65 and 83. Planning on popping between 2 and 6 seeds, right now 3 is looking like all i could comfortably fit in my 2'x4' tent.

Questions for WoH: What should I amend my perlite buckets with? Pro/Con for the 5gallon buckets? Is this an impatient, hairbrained scheme: turn my second tent (2x3x5) on it's side and start a bunch of headband seeds, steal one of the 3 T5s from my current hempies (who are looking like they're going to finish at around a zip to a zip and a half each), and start a 12/12FS headband run in 2L Hempy bottles? I could do like 10 with plenty of room, just very interested in the 12/12FS and would do it with amended perlite hempy buckets and oc+ and tap water.

whats the WoH think? I'm on an extended T break so i may just do the sideways attic grow to coincide with the end of the break (9-11 wks) and not worry about what happens....

Be easy,
Dr.J

I think 3ft will be too low to go 2L. I think the bottle itself is nearly a ft. Then you have the light rig.

Any way to do the attic grow without the tent?

So the idea is a 1inch hole 2 inches up correct? and a mesh screen on the inside... im okay with over engineering something to reduce any problems.
Cali, 1" holes are are great for peeping Tom's......7/16" to 1/2" hole is perfect for buckets.....I glue the screen on the outside. Makes cleanup at grows end a little easier when scrubbing the inside and the glue stays on the outside where it doesn't out-gas around your root system. Also, mark your starter hole so that the finished hole's bottom edge is 2" from the bottom...don't use 2" from the center of the hole.

Pro/Con for the 5gallon buckets?
Dr.J, it's been my experience that larger buckets don't bring home the bacon indoors in a tent. Don't get me wrong, there's guys doing 5g hempy's outdoors with monsters. If I remember too, DaliHempy said the larger buckets were no-gainers. What you wind up with is huge watering quantities, more nutrients used and a significant cut in headroom. I run a 4.5 x 2.5 x 7 tent and still run into headroom problems occasionally with certain strains in smaller 2g buckets. Area wise, with growing conditions optimum, I'd be lucky to fit more than 2 plants in there fully grown in 2g buckets (but then I wouldn't be so lucky, plants would be smaller, less productive). Your 2x3 is great for starting plants standing straight up. Schedule seed starts ≈4weeks before end of grow in your big tent.

I will be using 3 5 gallon buckets for my set up, i knew 5 gallon buckets might be a bit over kill but i don't see any real disadvantages to using them, i know that i might be wasting a bit of nutes and water but it seems like it would be worth it to me for the extra root space and structural integrity of the plants, the way i figure it is the reservoir in the hempy at 2 inches from the bottom couldn't hold more than a gallon and when its filled up with perlite it should only hold a miniscule amount, so i shouldn't need to add that much to refresh the nutes...

My crystal ball says "10 days left"..some of these tops are 3" across and swelling everyday.....plants are sucking up their own starches due to the lower doses of nutrients on the Canna feed schedule. I see maybe 2 more feedings and 5 days of flush and its quitting time. Trich's are milky...some still clear. This is the point where I was talking earlier about dropping the lumen's setting on my Lumatek ballast to improve THC production. Doesn't look like it would hurt the yield at this point does it? But, I'd have a hard time proving it was better, never grew this strain.

Psilocybinndude, yes, no big disadvantages but in case this is useful in the future, here's your numbers with a 2" perlite reservoir in the "ringed top" utility buckets.....3.5gal = 1.5gal per feed....2gal = 1gal per feed (33% less). I stepped down from 3.5g is the only reason I know. A lot of us with time on the clock have gotten tired of hauling, treating and mixing water. It's probably just human nature.

I drilled like 8- 1/8 inch holes all around the bucket. Seems to work fine for me so far
I like the idea of an "8 holer" hempy. If you grew a mother in in it you could call it an "octo-mom" (LOL). Seriously, it brings on ideas of "uniformity" in exhaust airflow around the root zone during watering and also a uniform "intake" of air as water is used and transpired up above. Only possible issue is variability in hole location with non-machined human DYI drilling. The lowest hole in the bucket becomes the res depth. But 1/8' holes are easy to nail repeatably. Why not....right on Chacka!

I could do the attic grow without the tent for sure, no reflective material and plenty of dust and insulation up there though so when things start getting sticky i'd be pretty worried...maybe i ought to hold off on the sog style 12/12FS and just do 4 or 5 full ones in the 2x4, step down the pot size to 10L and go with it

thanks jela, thats what i was thinking, good to know 5gals are basically pushing it too big indoors...i think i will just step it down to some smaller containers and do more of em...can probably handle 4-6 in the 2x4...

anyone have any ideas on micronutes or supplements for a 100% perlite hempy and oc+?
I'm pretty sure I'm going to treat any deficiencies with the EJ I've got and/or brew some tea/soup...just if the gals don't get everything they need from the bucket itself...
but seriously, micronutes? mittledier?

thanks everyone!!

Good lookin' nugs jella

Now if I can convince you to try the $1/bucket grow, cause you've got one hella green thumb.

Is spray painting the inside of the bucket a bad thing? Will it leech any chemicals that will hurt my plants?
Paint is likely to come off slightly whether you paint inside or out. I wouldnt paint the inside. A couple of outer coats and you're good to go.

CaliMackdaddy, where I live decent spray-paint is quite expensive, it costs just as much or more than black buckets.

The cans i got were 3.50 for mat black, 1 can does 2 coats for my 5 buckets plus i like the formfactor of these 2.5g buckets over the standard 3gallon from the hydro shop. Although because i fucked this set of 5 by spraying inside, i may go with the 3g buckets and save the hastle =\ I dont know if they will fit in my tent tho, they're fairly wide as opposed to the 2.5g buckets, im sure itl be plenty tho seeing what people have grown in them.

From now on im posting before i do anything stupid.. i swear growing in soil allows you to look over small details and its kicking me in the ass now...

LOL ... Make sure you do that Cali.

Don't worry about it though, if I listed how many 'wrong turns' Ive taken it would fill a thread or 2.

edit:
Not considered 2L? You would be surprised how big they can get. If you have the headroom.

haha right on.. yeah just sucks spending money on somthing that just turns into junk a day later... haha, hopefully ill be a sucess story of hempy pots, thats my real goal here now.
