Wiring a PC fan to a 12 V adaptor

Hi everyone,

Setting up a microgrow and am struggling with the fans!

I have one fan at the moment, and am trying to set it up with a 12v power adaptor. I have tried following the rollitup thread with instructions on this to an absolute T but something isn’t right!

(I would post there but that thread is really old)

I have my PC fan’s red wire attached to the adaptor’s white wire, and the two black wires attached to each other also. Nothing is happening!

I’m a complete noob, clearly! Any input would be great as this is my second time trying this! Brand new fan and adaptor being used.

can u post a pic of the adapter you are using?

are you sure it is pushing enough ma to run the fan?

Must be AC to DC converter. AC won't work.

amp output of 12 v adapter is?
amp draw of fan is?

Old universal power supplies for laptops is very good for this sort of things. There you have a lot of amps.

You're able to dim and change voltage on most of them.

Hey Bud, don't take this the wrong way but if you don't understand the basic wiring of a fan and adapter then just go buy one. There are many that don't know much about wiring and you can cause a fire, it's just not worth it for a cheap fan. Hit a second hand store if you are short on cash and pick one up for next to nothing.
 
I use an old school radio shack 120 to 13.6 v dc inverter to play with 12 toys. Modern version would be harbor freights cheapest.

This is very true. If don't know how to properly solder just go out and buy a power adapter.

You could use an old PC ATX power supply also. You could jump it by connecting green wire to any black wire on the 20/24 pin connector. Then you will have less of a fire hazard.

That is true but in the OP's case I say go to Wallmart. For $20 you can get a fan that will move much more air and that's in Canada. I am sure there are much cheaper in the USA.
