EDIT: Pardon the rant! I see the troll has been detained ^^;

Shall I tell the anti-pit people something? More people are bitten by small dogs and dogs not classified as 'dangerous dogs'. People often decline to press charges because the animal is deemed cuter. What bollocks. Small terriers especially are prone to outbursts of aggression.

I nearly had my face ripped off at the age of seven by a LABRADOR owned by a close fried of my mother.

I understand there must have been an error in my body language or I failed to respond to his signals now.

To this day I have NEVER had a problem with Akitas, mastiffs, American pit bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, boxers, (well, any molasser) alsatians, Rottweilers, Dobermans... You get the picture. I spent 2 months on a farm with a pack of 12 (Yes, 12!) dogs, 11 pitbulls and one alsatian. When I arrived they didn't know me at all but the whole time they kept me warm when I slept, followed and helped me round up the horses as I worked and offered buckets of affection and love. All the little lapdogs owned by the farmer's wife did was bark, yap and bite visitors.

I'm not saying a pit type never hurt anyone, I'm saying they do not deserve the demonisation.

They are ADORABLE, soft, cuddly, loyal family pets. And while I was working there, they WERE family to me.

That said- thanks to everyone who has posted pics so far :3 They're all sweethearts!! <3 <3

ilove my staffordshire... best dog ive ever had.. .rescued from a meth lab in n ga... there were over 30 dogs chained, half of them dead, rest dying, he was the only puppy. Obviously weaned weeks too young, and tortured with cold water dunking, this dog was intended to be a fighter from the day of his birth. the ACO that dropped him off said he was prolly a lost cause because the only human contact the dog had ever had, was negative and abusive...
the first 3 months were HARD... he needed alot of love and attention. being weaned so young he didnt know how to act, had little social skill

this is 12 months and alot of work later-

and 20 months-

and this was a couple weeks ago... my little unwanted runt no one had any faith in, is now so well behaved, trained and loved... that he has become more popular than me, and is even (at the bartenders request) allowed to walk the bar at one of the hottest spots in my town... lol

its ALL how you raise them.

No matter what the breed, I don't believe that any of them have instinctual attack mechanisms. I have never in my adult life hit a dog (or any animal) to correct bad behavior. I firmly believe that any dog who turns on someone was maltreated in some way, or was hit, and hit enough that he/she got fed up. Getting an animal to respect and obey you without hitting them is not that hard.

I had one of those. Great, great dog. Left her with a friends when I went to a trade show and they just opened the door and let her out to do her biz and she roamed into the street... Needless to say I'm not on good terms with them now.
:( that's my biggest fear, they are great but have such a crazy prey drive. Rabbit or a squirrel and they are out

You're right about attacking (for malicious reasons, not self defense)

A dog learns etiquette from his littermates- including where the boundary between play and fighting lies. We all need family to learn to socialize :3

Here's my big baby - South African Boerboel, aka South African Mastiff. A mix of several breeds, and known for stock protection prowess.

And another, here we were playing & when he barked he spit all over my camera lens !

And lastly my blond sweet heart. Her ass is so close to the ground I had to dig a tunnel through a drift so she could get to her "Potty spot".
