So, my question is.....When is the best time to pollinate the females.... Week 1 of flowering, Week 4....?

Also, what are some methods of stabilizing a strain?....

I have several strains that are great....But I have crossed a Sharks Breath and AK-48 that will put ya down... How do I go about making this a stable strain?

I'm a newb when it comes to growing. Can you put 4 different female plants in the same room/small space? I have heard yes and no. And the second part... how soon should I remove the plant that i'm unsure of its' sex (regular seed) from the known females (2" tall/3 days past germination)? I have been told I will know the sex before it is necessary to remove the plant, assuming it is a male?!

Thanks,

I am not quite sure of that. The plants I crossed I allowed to breed naturally, male appeared first, and probably started pollinating from the get go. The flowers that did appear were meager and I only got a few hundred seeds from two plants. I must admit that at the time I was using t12 strip lighting and had yet to do any research.

I would imagine that the earlier you pollinate the earlier the seeds will complete, but the fewer you will get.
Sometime around days 20 to 30 is probably the best window for pollination, maybe even later as long as the pistils haven't begun to turn and the plant is healthy.

Male and Female is actually very easy to discern by the time it is important. Don't stress about it. Yes, you can keep as many different female plants as you want in the same space so long as you can light them up.

Generally, males that are grown well will show their parts sometime after week 5 but before week 7 of veg. I have had them show as early as 25 days from seed, so just keep your eyes peeled. Males almost always show before females.

Females are very easy to recognize because you will see two little white "hairs" emerging from a tear drop shaped flower located around the 10th to 14th internode (set of branches). This is usually around 40 days or so into veg more or less. If you start at 12/12 from seed it will take 20-25 days before you can be sure of sex. I think you may as well veg the plants during that period and do not prefer 12/12 from seed.

the number of seeds is more dependent on how many male flowers open AND how far into bloom your girls are before you pollinate-- and not really the # of days / weeks in 12/12, since each plants bloom-rate in 12/12 varies..

IMO-- best time to pollinate is when the female has a dime-sized "puff" of hairs at a bunch of nodes, and the male has a LOT of opening/open flowers.

IF you have other plants, take the "breeders" elsewhere for 3-4 days (all they need is a 100w CFL to keep em going) and shake the male onto the female every day as he releases more pollen.
Before you return the female to the 12/12 room with other plants, spray her down well with water in the shower 1st to remove any un-used viable pollen.

Every calyx has the potential to become a seed-- so the more hairs/calyxs she has, the more seeds you'll get. BUT: If you wait too long to pollinate, the seeds may not be mature at time of harvest...

Also remember-- once pollinated, MOST of the time the buds will be smaller and fluffier-- but still very smoke-able!!! We've had gals that we seeded give us a couple hundred seeds (or more) at a time, and still give a couple decent OZ's of bud.

are you trying to create a new strain for yourself, and stabilize it ?

several ways you can go. your seeds are f1's grow em all out and look for common traits that are favorable. plants that stand out, yet are of common structure and build. take the best of these and kill the rest. grow these out further (veg) and really begin to look at them, for color, node space, smell, height etc.

take the best of those and kill off the rest. now you got you a fine mess of outstanding mothers. by now you should have picked a greasy male with common traits that you like to be a father. flip your girls into flower, and at week 4 pollinate only the cream of the crop. you will know by week 4 which are the best producers of what you want.

or you could use some of the male pollen you have now on one of the f1's, or you could clone the mother and use pollen from one of the f1's to pollinate her. depending on what traits you want.

if you think your f1's could use a little more romulus influence. hit some with the pollen....etc.

hey streetlegal, Im having a little problem.. I have a pc grow with 3 plants (2 WW and one dro). I pulled the cotyledon off one of the ww so its shorter than the other two. I have 250 watt CFL and they taller plants are starting to shade the short one.. is there any way I can trim some leaves or something to allow light to get to the short plant?

you can snip a few leafs that may help, dont over do it cause the bud sites can get leafy in response..
not many at all. It will hinder growth, Marijuana loves light. This is shy she has such sexy leafs.. maybe if its bushy clumpy and thick take some out the center.. if there are 20 take 4 leafs.. let it respond before you take anymore...
In nature this plant will think and animal is nibblin on it, but not to much it will get defensive, a Female might shift over to male flowers due to the stess..

Question: I got bag seeds, what do you think' will be the male/female ratio will be if I germinate say... 5 seeds? Came from a batch of reggie that was really seedy.

If I could predict things like that I'd be playing roulette right now...
There is no way to know. The overall ratio is going to be about 50/50 without considering hermaphrodism. You could get unlucky and get mostly males, or lucky and mostly females.

Here is a mental exercise:
You have a bag of red and green jelly beans. You ask me "If I stick my hand in this bag of Jellybeans, how many red and how many green will I get?"

Based on probability I can say that there is about a 2/3 chance you will get at least two red and two green. There's a smaller chance you could get all red, or all green, or any combination of them as well. To be honest, without looking into the future, there is no way to give a true answer.

See what I mean? There's just no way for anyone to give you anything accurate. The only way to find out is to grow them and hope for two girls. If you get one or none, so be it, if you get four or five... woo hoo... but I have no idea what kind of jelly bean you are going to get.

lol Snow Crash I know that was a stupid question. Ok I got one more, now don't get me wrong. I'm not stupid it's just I know nothing of indoor growing. I've always grown outdoors and now I'm living in the city. The only thing I have ever used lights for was lamps. My question is "If I buy a 200 watt cfl bulb is there a certain lamp I need to buy to screw it in? What do I need to go with cfl lighting?

agreed...

turtle nothing to be worried man... its a rare case to get 1:1 but...
you know you are a bit lucky you get 5 not 2 :D

You want to use daylighters for veg. And cool white for flower. Into 3 rd grow. It works great. Want 6500 k on lighting package for veg and 3700 k for flower

I am not a fan of high wattage CFL bulbs. The heat they throw, versus the loss of energy inversely proportional to the distance from the bulb, make high wattage CFLs extremely inefficient when compared to similarly priced HID or several smaller CFL bulbs.

20ish watt bulbs are the beezneez for growing shorter plants, 1 foot max. They can be placed as close as 1 inch to the bulb and at that distance the amount of energy provided to the plant is very impressive. The 200w CFL will need to be kept as far as 6 inches from the plants, and that distance allows for the dispersion of a lot of the bulbs energy, effectively making it about as useful as a lower wattage bulb, but with a slightly larger footprint.

For your consideration:
IMG_0514.jpgIMG_0513.jpgIMG_0509.jpg

Here we have 5 plants grown on seven 27w bulbs, mostly daylight spectrum.

To answer the question (finally) yes, you need a special socket for bulbs over 150w.
Standard 23w, 25w, and 27w CFL bulbs are great when combined with a power strip and the medium sized Clamp light reflectors. All of this can be found at your local hardware store, about $7 per light when said and done. Maybe as low as $5 per light if things are on sale or you find a good deal.

If you're going to spend more than $70 on CFL bulbs then I'd suggest just getting a 150w or 250w HPS system, since they are much more efficient and not much more expensive (around $100 depending on quality). In time you could then get a Phillips Ceramic Metal Halide bulb and really start kicking some ass.

Is there any way i can veg one plant for a month in a 1 1/2 gallon rubbermaid then transfer to a 3 gal rubbermaid to bloom. DWC by the way. All conditions are about perfect so with the small size of the res affect my plant size and yield like a small dirt pot would do? Sorry for the horrible every direction question but i wanted to find out before i went smaller. Thanks a million.

I have no idea... Maybe... I suppose it can be done, but I'm not sure if you specifically could pull it off.

I think that you should look and see what other people have done. If other people can grow in 1.5 gallon rubbermaid DWC then you probably can too.

Most DWC systems I see are at least 2 gallons... but I dunno really. Never bothered to try it. Why use such a small reservoir? I mean, if you're "going to upgrade" why not just use a 3 gallon to start with. The cost difference can't be more than a few dollars.

Okay so i flushed my girls today and not quit sure what to do next as in feeding and watering. Do I start back up on my normal feeding schedule tomorrow or should i wait till the soil is completely dried out or what? Or water for a few more days? Im growing in FFOF in one gallon pots under a 400w hps. Normally I have to water or feed every 24hrs. Thank you

a few days ago a buddy of mine gave me a super lemon haze that was in all hydroton...i dont do that so i transplanted it into straight soil fox farm happy frog with mycorrihaze. only thing was. the roots were coming out of the bottom of the hydroton containers holes so when i transplantd i had to slice them they were all tangled up and looked like dreadlocks, so i sliced them so i could pull them through the containers bottom holes once i emptied all of the hydroton out. well since then in the soil it seems to not be growing at all and it wont "stand up" like im so used to with fast growing plants...what do you think is the problem? and also this transplant was over a week ago and the plant is just stagnant except for a few leaves that died and were somewhat green but super dry and life less, there wasnts even ne water bleeding from the leafs stem when i pulled it off it almost seemed hollowed out...ne help please, i wont have a plant die in my garden

Thank you so much for the advice!!! Is there any way you could help me with a 6 plant calander? I would love to keep 2 mothers if possible. Non rooted clones not counting as a plant. Maybe just one mother?
