This is a common misconception about A/C units, but they actually don't exhaust room air. The front vent intakes air, makes it cold and blows it back out. The exhaust is there to vent the heat created by the unit. I don't know for a fact that absolutely no air is exchanged in the process, but I know its not part of the way it is supposed to work.

Would it be possible to use a very small window unit inside a work shop type shed? Something to cool a 50 square foot room?

The problem with window units is you gotta stick the back end of it outside a window or wall. I do like them better than portable units if you have the proper space for it. Very small or very large, not sure why size wouuld make a difference, but the bigger the better.

You need a dual hose portable a/c that keeps inside and outside air separated. your inside intake will suck in hot air and blow it back out into the room nice and cold after it passes over the coil filled with refrigerant. the coil runs through a sealed barrier and the heat absorbed from inside your room is cooled off by the outside air. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MiQCBIx1mM not all portable a/c work to create a sealed environment so before you order one make sure by reading the specs or calling the company. http://www.sunpentown.com/wa9dusywihe.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JOhOJVnjQ4 I personal love multi zone mini splits but you should have an hvac processional install one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6mDAfWQm1Y
