ya know, its been so long since i used a media, i forgot to ask if you had covers over the hydroton. if not, they need to be covered using anything you have handy.

Yep that's mold; I recognize it from my college daze, looking at mold under a microscope.
It can definitely damage your grow. Spraying it with straight Hydrogen Peroxide may help or you could remove the balls with the mold and soak them in a fungicide then put them back. Cooking them in an oven for about 30 min at 200 degrees would do it too. I used hydroton on my first couple of grows then went with straight net pots. The mold spores have contaminated your pump, res, and anything else the water has come in contact with, so you'll have to deal with that also before your next grow.
small little net pots on that system....3 inch? looked into it and thought about maybe getting the medium size system from them but the plant sites are way too close for me.
I have a system sort of like that and it's bullet-proof reliable
