Watering.....

Hey everyone I have been doing a lot of reading on watering. I have 4 girls in 5gal smart pots an feed bout 2/3 a week. I do feed, off, water, off, feed, off, water etc... I give them 2 gals of water. Hints to my questions... should I have a lot of run off? It starts soaking out the bottom by the 7-8 cup of water an sometimes quite a bit.. each plant gets 10 cups =2gal... Thanks for your time...

I use about 1/4gal per gallon of medium as an average so in 5gal about 1 1/4gal per watering gives me a little run-off in 5gal fabric pots. Thing is, with those fabric pots if you don't pack the edges when transplanting into them they'll tend to leak a lot of water around the sides, that results in more water than they need, mostly wasted. Try packing the edges next time and you'll see less water loss through the sides of the pot. I water slowly at first, let it sit for a minute to let the soil absorb throughout the pot and that also tends to get less run-off too soon. Otherwise you're dumping a bunch of water or feed and the roots aren't absorbing it as well.

That's exactly what happens it starts flowing out the sides....oo ok so just drop my water level so I'll be a 1 1/4 gal per 5gal... yea I water with a cup.. the first two cups of water just sit for a sec then suck right up...so I am ten cups now so I wonder how many cups it will take now.... thanks for the help GroErr..

This is why I like to use a sprinkler type pour device because pouring water usually runs rite through and out leaving dry spots ........I
Like to give a quick soak to each one and let the soil start to saturate and get the sponge affect ....wait like 15 20 minutes then finish watering .........good luck

If ur water is flowing out of the side of your fab pots that means u have dry spots in your medium. I would try watering slower around the edges and not letting my plants dry out so much. Or you can try a wetting agent to reduce surface tension in ur medium so it will except the water instead of blocking it. (Soap, coco wet, sm90, etc) When I let mine dry out too much the medium will repel water for a while until it's wet again.

I agree with vostok if it's possible. But with fab pots if ur plant is big then the roots are probably through the bottom and ur plants are stuck.

The amount of run off you need is relative to the amount you're feeding and the amount your plant is actually uptaking plus environmental conditions. If youre light feeding then you may not need run off or very little. If you're giving them a strong does or high ppm's that's when u would NEED run off. since your plant isnt using everything with strong feedings if you don't flush out the extra salts it'll build up and your babys won't be happy. I hope this helped.

Thanks guys great info... yea I can't pick mine up they are in cages... so use a thing to water gardens???... I'm doing outdoor... this is outdoor forum

Yes get yourself either a hose attachment ....I like the long wand type they save on my back from bending over a bunch ......or get a watering can with a long neck and many holes the water comes out .....not sure how big your grow is but for nutrient days I use a tank with a cheap pump works well ......good luck

Just for measuring purposes 10 cups does not equal 2 gallons. Unless you're just speaking of a random "cup" then never mind.

Hell yeah. I'm rocking almost the exact same set up except I put my filter on the spigot. I'm using an rv water filter that removed chloramine and chlorine. 19.99 shipped. What kind of filter is yours? View attachment 3761524
I'm using a boogie blue plus. I used the camco filter u have and it worked well. The boogie blue is rated for 45k gallons. I think the camco is 15-20k. The boogie was 50bucks. I got mine specifically from Bay hydro, but they're other places too.

It's funny, I thought the same thing but decided maybe he was meaning that he waters anywhere between 10 cups and 2 gallons. By the time I got to the end of the thread, I'd forgotten.

Nice, I was trying to find a cheaper alternative to the green knight garden filter. I figure whenever you're buying something for our hobby, it's usually just repurposed, relabeled stuff that's been marked up 40%. I love mine though. I think about letting enough water for my garden to sit out and dechlorinate, and then schlepping it in 5 gallon buckets through the yard and it makes my back hurt. Lol.

Great, now when I go to dicekeys I'm gonna be counting how many gallons of sweet tea all the fat people drink with there 4way combo plate. Lol
I saw they had a new Dickey's in Marianna Florida. I had never heard of the chain before that. Haven't tried their BBQ yet.

I used to use a Big Gulp cup for measuring. Just over a quart I think. I don't measure anymore. I go by the glug count when adding my liquid 11-2-1 ferts to a five gallon bucket of water. In round numbers, it is about two glugs to the cup.
