Well with pearlite any over water will be allowed to wick back up to the bed, avoiding any dry pockets from uneven drenching and gives even support too. Slow and even watering is how to avoid dry spots, your set up will help mitigate these issues. I always put rapid rooters on a bed of pearlite and water from the pearlite for seeds and cuts, it's the easiest most consistent way to provide even saturation. In this case your just using it as a buffer zone too, your right on track.

Thanks. I found a large tub of coco and perlite mix I'd made before switching to hydro tub. . Thinking of sticking with it unless it is highly recommended to mix with soil. I'm going to be using my chemical notes for this grow rather than organic.
So what are your thoughts on substrate?
And how deep should I put perlite in the bottom tub?
I put 12 screw size holes into the top tub, is that big enough for wicking?

As for the holes, are they big enough for a piece of pearlite to make contact with your substrate when set on it? That would be the determining factor between the hole size and the depth of pearlite. You were concerned with height so I wouldn't raise the top bed too far out of the bottom one but perhaps a little bit as you were concerned about evaporation, easier now rather than after everything is in place. I see nothing wrong with your premix, have you put some lime in it? I would mix in a couple table spoons of hydrated lime/dolomite lime to fix the ph but otherwise I would think your ready to go.

Thanks. I think I'll have to enlarge the holes to be on the safe side. Since it will be sitting on prrlite I don't have to worry about substrate washing out.
If I do soilless do I do 5.8 pH for water and nutes still?

Well my grow is a soil-less mix, but i try to ph when i do, just like soil. im organic now don't really check ph anymore. i've heard ppl treat coco grows like hydro so im unsure. an colo, i totally forgot about lime and i just bought a bag .

I have only grown ghost chilies. Calcium def is the more common issue with them. The leaves will crinkle up. Mine have grown well in year old cow manure in 5 gallon pots. Pulled off double hand cup full last week. I'd recommend hand polinatting them if outdoors and mandatory indoors

I got these one pots with huge 1" holes, the only time they loose mix is when I first fill them so I'm sure you'll be fine there.
My recommendation with soil or soil-less is to use about 1 teaspoon per gallon of substrate of hydrated lime/dolomite lime per grow and never have to worry about ph again!

Yup, I use the hydrated lime over here too.
but even when I didn't, I never really messed with ph either... Don't know if it affected things or not, because I've only checked once --this last grow-at the beginning.
I mix a lot/most of my soil. I hand gather all I can, then a touch of Hydrated lime, sulphur, diatomaceous earth, and if I have any, bonemeal, and bloodmeal, feathermeal is good stuff too(as long as its not too hot).
this last batch of amendments I made up, I actually ground old deer skull in the coffee grinder.. Wear a mask if you do this!! Even when the lid is on, bone dust escapes into the air...
I learned the hard way so y'all don't have to!

I got started doing real good amendments for my food patches(veggie garden, not like a nicotine patch ) over the years.
i was brought up feeding the soil not the plants, the soil feeds the plants. Figured it only made sense to mix my own for me greenery!
Pellets should work Voidling, I think...lol, never used em. Tryna, do they melt down or stay pelletized in the mix when watering?
