Which is why crime and murder rates are higher in red states. But, it's a total mystery to the GOP why America has so many gun deaths. If only we could look elsewhere in the world to figure out how to prevent so many gun deaths... I blame the culture war that Fox and the other right wing propagandists push. Too damn many Americans with a woody over the idea of killing other Americans. As for me, I'd like to live in a country where I did not have to worry about every wing nut carrying a gun to the grocery store.

Be nice to live in a country where they don't let criminals who've been arrested 39 times out of jail again, so you don't need to worry about protecting your family with a fire arm.
But at the same time, is that really the answer, to have a privatized incarceration state? We need to attack the core issues, which frankly start with eliminating desperation and healing mental illness. The dependence on drugs has really destroyed our health and humanity. It's sadly quite obvious that our government doesn't care about our health, or they would have sent out vitamin supplements instead of fucking covid tests.

In some countries, if you get caught stealing or committing crime, they chop your hand off. They go right to the core of the issue, and don't need to incarcerate you for life.

After I first got it, and got over it, we took vitamin D, C, B12 every day for a long time. IVM once a week, and Hydroxyqloriquin (sp?) . Could have been why my second round was very mild like allergies. Didn't lay me out for 3 weeks like the first time.
But, yes.. we have a drug and mental illness problem that I really don't know how you get control of that.
And no, the gov does not give a shit about your health. Our food supply is shit, and some poisonous, and banned in other Countries.

I will admit that those Countries never really let it get out of control in the first place. We'd rarely see crime when living abroad for 5 years. I can really only remember 1 guy got caught stealing the equivalent of $700, and they took a right hand, and left foot. The other case was a taxi driver who took a British woman out in the desert and raped her. They printed the date that they were gonna cut his junk off in the Al Jazzera, and everybody gathered at the Stadium to witness it. Can't remember if the guy died or not. They offer no medical help afterwards..you're on your own if you bleed out or not... and judgment is swift!.. no months or years of trial.

Around here, thieves go into the stores day in and day out, and fill shopping carts with just under 900 or so dollars worth of merchandise. Enough not to be a felony, or go to jail. Just gambling on getting a lifetime trespass notice, and slap on the wrist. Then, they just head right out of the door to the nearby tent cities in the woods, and no one can really do anything. I think one store, Target, loses around 40k per month or something?.

Walmart loses 3 Billion a year due to shoplifting. It only 1% of their revenue, but shit... that's alot of money.

Its best not to haggle with the thieves either, or you might get stabbed in the neck. You might get stabbed anyway, for no reason at all, other than someone on "blues" is having a bad day.

That's not the core issue. If you are hungry and you steal to keep food in your belly or stay warm, is your petty theft really the core issue? Of course it's not, the petty theft if related to the desperation felt by the individual due to unmet needs. Addressing the core issue begins with identifying and addressing those unmet needs.

OR... they just have a clepto addiction. I dated this one gal years ago that had a nice job, everything she needed, but felt the need to just walk a shopping cart out to her Jeep... I asked her why the hell would you do that?... she just said she gets a rush out of it. I think she's in jail now. She was caught stealing so many times at Walmart, she drove an hour from her town to another Walmart, and the facial recognition software picked her out, and they held her there till the cops came and extradited her back to her hometown county jail.

Then she had some other unmet need, likely stemming from her childhood. Perhaps it met her need for control. I'm not sure how we address that sort of thing as a society, but it obviously begins with a positive home life growing up.

I'm not sure that anyone is actually going hungry.. They all got EBT cards, and dozens of foodbanks to choose from. Nice old grannies cooking up huge pots of goulash at the churches a few times a week.

If they are trading their benefits for drugs, that sucks..

Somehow I doubt that 9 million kids in the US are trading benefits for drugs.

Then why do so many people refer others to go to the food banks? Why aren't they saying "don't go there, there isn't enough food, and kids will starve".

Why are we taking a massive influx of immigrants, by the millions, when 9 million of our own children starve?

Food banks don't provide enough meals to keep families fed, it's more of a short term stop-gap.
