Some advice but before that FUCK THE HATERS dont hate on CFLS and on someone else's grow. Plenty of growers have proven what floros can do and most have done damn well compared to growers using so called big boy lights hids. And before any wise ass decides to tell me to get hids I do use hids so shut the fuck up.
Back to the subject at hand, plants look great, however the light at 20 inches may still be too far. Get the fan in and lower that thing down as close as possible, use the back of your hand to determine if the light will burn the plants. You dont want stretching to be out of control. Also see if you can throw your floro into the mix for a mix spectrum of lighting. Daylight along with hps will yield crystal buds.
Try to get some white wall up to reflect the light that is being absorb by the open wood or insulation.
Also you may want to consider switching to bigger pots to maximize your lighting and grow space, this would slow down your grow because the plant will spread its roots system but will lead to a bigger yeilding plant in the end. If you do that you or if not you could also lst for better results. Your grow has great potential and can yield big if you do it right.
Oh yea, pick up some dolomite lime or some hydrated lime, your going to need it for the ph swing that comes with most miracle grow soils.
Check out mblazes grows with topping and lst. Killer shit with killer yields.
I just wanted to say any novice should really avoid hydrated lime. Its very alkaline and really easy to over do it, and then you've got problems. Avoid it, and use dolomite lime if its necessary.

Hey guys hope alls well.

So if you look back to what I had going at the beginning the plants have come a long way. So has the setup. Yesterday I changed to 4 gallon pots, new trays, and changed the distance from the lights for maximum growth without light burn. So a lot has been done and I think this new home is going to make for some big healthy plants.

I also added a timer to the lights and they are on a 12/12 cycle timed roughly to sun up and sun down. That way the are resting at night and growing in the day. Last but not least I added a new nutrient solution, GH Maxibloom which I got from my local hydroponics store. They started on it yesterday and will probably get nutes every other watering.

That's all for now, but again, if you look back at where I started this thing has come a long way. I'll be back tho in a couple weeks with another update.

Take care everyone.

Read further in the thread you will see I added an hps. I only used the t12 floros for vegging, which they are perfectly capable of doing.

What's going on everybody.

Here are my babies again on day 3 of flowering. I've got them up on boxes to be 20" from the light. I added the fan to keep the light cooled and help the plants develop stronger roots. All is working well so far. You can see which ones will probably be female and which will be male. The close up one shows what I predict is a female, and I topped this one so you can see where 4-6 main colas will be developing. Then you'll see my nutes, water jugs, and four clones I took yesterday. Gotta start getting ready for the next round of plants.

Anyway that's it for now hope everybody is enjoying a successful grow.

Another update in a couple weeks or once the females show pistols.

you thought of putting a square of thin plywood around that and cover it with mylar or something, could utilize the light that wee bit more and will pay off at harvest

Here are my babies, all four of them. Two are big and bushy and two are skinny and sparse. I am hoping this means I have at least two females. I have heard usually males are a little thinner, true? I topped after about 5 nodes, which should result in multiple colas from what I have read. I plan to veg them for two more weeks then begin to flower. They smell really good. They may have been a little over watered early on but no real damage yet to be seen. Right now they are dry up top and I am letting them soak up the rest of the water at the bottom of the pots before watering again. Also watching plant behavior as a guide to when they will need water again. Hope to have two females and get maybe half pound once everything is said and done.
i think for the little light your use your letting to much of it get away. you should find some way of traping the light so that your not losing so much. your plants will grow bigger. you can get some ply wood and just box it off, get some flat white paint and paint the wood that will face the plants its cheap stuff and will help with you losing so much light.

Man you guys are hating on my grow. Of all my friends I am one of the only one that takes the time to grow his own pot, so I think that's an accomplishment in itself.

These plants are slated for harvest in early February so they still have a long ways to go. And for many of you read the current updates on the grow and you will see I added the 400w HPS. Once I weed out the males this is more than enough light for these plants.

So take this ride with me and in February you will be glad you did. There's enough for everyone on this grow and by nature my second grow will be that much better.

So thanks for tagging along and I'll be back to update you on the ladies as soon as they show some pistols.

Ditch the miracle grow man. Spend the extra money on Fox Farms Ocean Forest soil and you wont regret it. I use Ocean Forest soil, FoxFarms Grow Big for veg and FoxFarms Tiger Bloom for flower.

Wouldn't have it any other way

Hey guys here's a Friday update they are showing some signs of sex but nothing to be sure. I have read Northern Lights is a strain that does most of its flowering towards the end. If anyone can tell the sex already let me know. I have four but I pulled one which I think is female into natural light and took some pictures. The stalks are fattening up and they are enjoying the big pots. I am expecting to harvest in early to mid February based on when I started flowering, giving them about 9 weeks total.

I started this thread mostly to show off my plants. I am having problems tho and need advice.

I vegged my plants for 8 weeks. At the end of the eighth week I started flower on 12/12 under 400w hps lighting. It has been 10 days since flower began and I am still seeing no signs of sex. No little balls and not a pistol to be found.

The strain is Northern Lights, which I've heard can take as many as three weeks to show sex after flower begins. But I still can't believe this.

Is it possible that temperature slows them down from flowering? The temp in the room is abt 60 at night and 65-70 during day.

When they went into flowering, I put them into bigger pots, 4 gallon, b/c they had filled out the 1 gallon pots. Could it be possible they are spreading their roots and that's why they are not spending energy on flowering??

I know patience is the key with this but I can't see how this is taking so long for them to show sex. I will wait patiently and try to curb my greed but c'mon!!!!

Im surprised you have no pre-flowers after 8 weeks. Most of my plants show sex by day 35. Males seem to take longer though in my experience. Hope you have none :)

It looks like we'll both be harvesting around valentines day. Thats if your plants kick in to flowering. Hope they come around soon.

Btw, you can still drop those lights closer. I wouldn't want a 400w 3 feet away.

all my males happened first and ive heard males grow faster and do things faster. Hopefully they will show soon but maybe its just the strain or genetics?

Valentine's Day is going to be good, as long as they are dried and half cured by then. I'm sure they will be.

I put extra boxes under the plants, they are about 18 inches away now. I put my hand on top of the plants under the light and I could hold it there a long time //// no burn. That should make them happy.

Otherwise, I am really waiting for some sex signs, we'll see what happens. For my next grow I am thinking of doing a perpetual SOG, maybe 10 plants and do them lollipop style in one gallon pots. It's a quicker turnaround, more yeild, and more efficient use of energy. So I think next time around I will try that, in fact I may sacrifice one of my ladies to get started on cloning while the others are flowering.

Christmas was good to me. This morning I went in to see my plants and one is for sure female. One was also male and I had to get rid of it. Two more left to sex. So this is good news at least there is one confirmed female. I am thinking of taking clones from this female and doing a SOG. If there is only one female I'm thinking that would be the best solution. Let me know what you guys think. It is a northern lights strain. Hope everyone had a good Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
