To all interested in LED Lighting...

I just wanted to point out to all interested in LEDs...

With the "holidays" approaching, all the retailers have out thier prettiest strands of LED holiday lights at reasonable prices.

A few strands of white, maybe mixed with red....A couple of hours to arrange the individuals into a grid....

One could have a small "experiment" for a small price.

I'm just sayin'.....

I would like to experiment with these suckers when theprice falls a bit. It seems to me they have limited penetration but that would make them awesome for sog type grows. I need more experience at keeping plants alive before I spend anymore dosh First harvest in 4 weeks wooohoooo.

yeah dude they have to be in the right color temparature. u see all these posts about 6500k and 2700k lights those are color spectrum temparture. just becuz they put red plastic over the lite doesnt mean it is the correct color temp.

I heard about this guy that yielded 27 ozs dry with 2 Lite-Brites. He made a picture of the sunset over the ocean on one, and an American Flag on the other. It had the perfect blend of reds and blues.

Obviously the technology isn't there to do any sort of commercial or even mid sized grow using LEDs.

BUT there are a number of people on this site trying to do micro grows - in PC cases, file cabs etc...

For them, it may be worthwhile. Light with virtually no heat!? How cool!

One could also use LEDs for a small cloning box, or a box for a small mother plant.

It's not without merit. You just need to be open to the possibilities.

I agree with you. The owner of the grow shop I go to went to a show recently where the were showing LED lights He was impressed enouhg too order ten for the store. Probably retail around $1100.00 so they have aways to go. I don't think they are technically lights I think the are semiconductors, maybe its the same. VV

i got 2 led lights and use them with my 400 watt hps. I focus the leds on the bottom of the plant for some lower and side lighting.

Nowstopwining posted some light led light grids. This article gives you the practical information. For supplemental add 10 to 20 watts of led for every 100 watts of hid lights. To use exclusively instead of the hid's you need 25 watts of led per 100 watts of hid. That 150 watts to replace 600 watts. 75% savings in electric use.
I do find it interesting that their grow example shows a more even, although smaller, grow with the hid. Which just shows me the 1' grids are the right way to go instead of these spots. I kinda figured that from the more even grow you get with the t-5's. I'm going to have to look at that other post now that I have this information. VV

That is not a study, that is an advertisement. LED currently produce about 100 lumens per watt, about the same had HID and fluorescent. But they cost much more say, 5 times as much or more. It will be quite some time before LED are practical to use for anything but decorative lighting. They do offer a small advantage in that the power supply where most of the heat is generated can be located remotely but this spectrum stuff is bullshit in my not so humble opinion.

ha ha I started to reply but I was just rewriting the article, it maybe an advert but it is basically scientific fact. If you think its bullshit I respect your decision but don't neccessarily agree with it. Read up some more though - misinformation is a bad thing here is a good place to start. Lumen (unit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Just one more simple thing. Why do you think a lot of people use different types of light for vegging and flowering wether it be changing CFLs or HIDs? Different wavelengths of light required perhaps.
