With the 4' fluotescent tubes, there were two colour temperatures that were required to grow decent pot.... Waaaaaay back when in the Stone Ages....*cough*.....I went over to "the man's" house to pick up a bag of weed. As usual, those guys always want you to hang and smoke one with them.....kinda lonely type..... He showed me his grow room and he had everything under regular fluorescent shop lights (because they didn't look "funny" to the outside world) -They were likely in the 5000K temp range. He had the tubes literally right on top of the plants......millimeters away. He kept them nearest the center of the tubes and avoided placing anything near the ends....because that's where they get hot. All the plants were short but they were also extremely healthy and that weed was some of the best I've ever smoked to this day....no idea what it was....just some bagseed I'm sure. This was in the 70's, btw ...
- Cool Whites = 6500K
- Warm Whites = 2700K.
And the tops were very close to the lights. The plants were never more than 4" away from the tubes - some tops grew right into the fixture and didn't get fucked up. I never experienced anything like heat stress or light burn growing with fluorescents. While tube growing does not generate the same massive colas that todays LED's can generate, the cured weed did work VERY well.
To get the best results, I found that having the following mix of the cool whites and warm whites for the plants phase was essential.
- BLOOM - Warm Whites to Cool Whites mix of 2:1.
- VEG room - Cool Whites to Warm Whites mix of 2:1.
Those were the days ...
