There's a rush on guns like hand sanitizer.

Is being almost three times more likely to kill your self or your family a good thing in your opinion?

you’ve still never cited where you got your copy and paste from lol
Its not like these trolls are known to edit shit out of context, or use other's cut/pastes that are from bullshit blog sites and never check that they are not just regurgitating propaganda, because it sounds like a good argument (even if it is 100% fabrication).

I really love when it acts like someone is going to read an entire book or find and pay for access to a medical journal to see if what they are saying is true or not.

Low estimate is 80k and high is 2.5 million per year according to U.S. Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS).
uh-huh.

A firearm kept in a home is at least 167 times more likely to deter criminal attack than to harm a person in the home.

That is not true even according to your own (still uncited) copy and paste

also a trailer is more of a shelter than a home

37 suicides account for 86% of the total for the Kellerman study UncleBunk keeps citing but has yet to source.

Studying suicidal people and applying it to the general population is junk science.
“That’s junk science!” cries the global warming denier

I support gun control and live in a state that requires a background check from local and state police as well as the FBI and we're also a "may issue" and not a "shall issue" state. I'm pro choice I'm pro gay rights. I'm pro environment. I'm pro immigrant and nationalism makes me sick. I'm not a prepper waiting for an electromagnetic pulse and I hope Trump rots in hell. I'm also a law abiding (for the most part) gun owner. I also kill at least a couple of deer a season with bow or gun which I butcher and distribute to families that want the protein badly. OK admittedly I was fishing but interestingly enough you don't have to troll on this "politics" forum. I've yet to see a thread started that didn't immediately elicit a flurry of name calling. No substance to 90% of the posts made and when there is it gets drowned out by the cacophony made by people who dispise each other but can't help but to follow each other from thread to thread.
Following Newtown more gun permits were issued in that town in six months than the previous ten years. People who are afraid buy firearms and right now they are buying them faster than toilet paper.
It's funny how you white as rice (but not racist) middle class sheep (fishing) always yak about school shootings. Remember Cecil the lion who was tied out for the doctor to shoot. Well between the soccer moms and the pretend liberal capitalists the outcry was deafening. You all looked straight at Cecil but failed to see the starving black children in the same picture. Being blind is the worse form of racism. You can't show me a man who is truly colorblind. All you can do is try. I commend you if even down deep there is no "ism" ever. There's no outrage at the young black men killing each other in far greater numbers than any school shooting but if it's a white kid let's interrupt programming. This doesn't have anything to do with 30 round magazines and black guns.
Not that it matters, but I really am just messing around. I don't expect to converse and find middle ground with either the left or right here but I am hoping for some creative name calling.
As a side note I've been kissing close to someone with confirmed Coronavirus. I'm just a little bit more frightened than I have been and I have to work in the morning at a facility where we believe there are 4 or 5 more with the virus but not yet tested and confirmed. I've been laughing at all the fuss but I seem to have a knot in my stomach. I'm over 60 and compromised so I'm really hoping I'm not screwed big time. If I'm not here in November please vote for anyone but Donald. That bastard just might have killed me.IMG_3079.jpg.b3bca25556a7d4ad19ba7768b6b97005.jpg

Anyone who goes around saying having a firearm in your home makes you 43 times more likely to be killed by your own gun than defend against a criminal attack has never looked at that study and is repeating a facebook meme; not stupid but obviously ignorant.

The 43:1 ratio comes from a study by Arthur Kellermann and Donald Reay published in the June 12, 1986 issue of New England Journal of Medicine that studied a small scale of firearm deaths in King county WA from 1978-1983.

From the study's authors:
Kellermann 1986 said:
Mortality studies such as ours do not include cases in which burglars or intruders are wounded or frightened away by the use or display of a firearm. Cases in which would-be intruders may have purposely avoided a house known to be armed are also not identified…A complete determination of firearm risks versus benefits would require that these figures be known.
Having said this they proceeded to exclude any instances they found of a potential criminal that was not killed and/or thwarted.

The authors also included suicides from their small study of Seattle and Bellvue as crime and defensive use of firearm while acknowledging:
Kellermann 1986 said:
the precise nature of the relation between gun availability and suicide is unclear.
An analysis by Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz in the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology of successful defensive uses of firearms against criminal attack concluded that the criminal is killed in only one case in approximately every one thousand attacks.

So apply that to Kellermann 1986's own findings that he himself admits above should be included and the 43:1 becomes a .043:1.

Now the suicides. Omitting them, as they're not defensive use of a firearm, brings the .043 down to .006.

So literally, according to Kellermann and Reay's own data and commentary including later data that they themselves insisted should be included yet omitted any instances of you are .006 times more likely to harm yourself or someone in your home with your firearm, but you're 167 times more likely to deter a criminal attack with a firearm, than harm anyone in your home.
