Top of the morning, Buderton! Was going to message you the other day while I was collecting pollen was thinking of our chat.Top of the morning AJ. I am sipping my first coffee and preparing to finish packing up beans form my lastest selections to ship out to the growmies. Was up last night making labels and filling packs so the bulk of the work is done. Yah!
I always wanna find the best male ( to a fault) so I try to do all possible combinations of 1:1 pollinations , then hold all the parents till the progeny are grow out and evaluated. Hence the reason I've been stringing a dozen or so males along for the last couple yrs! That didn't come out right.? Anyhow, be like water...
You know I gave myself 2 hours for some espresso which I knew was ambitious.. Here I am 4 hours late hahah!
That sounds fun, wish I could join. I am getting ready to send a few things out myself
Man the 1:1 and test the children. That's work, bro. Eventually this is the way I would want to do it also. But for now the 'high risk / agressive selecting' is what my current space affords. So I will sacrifice one by one (with confidence of course) based on the paired plants and what I'm trying to do.
So for example the Beatrix crosses I just went through, I discarded the tallest because it had shown triploid about halfway up main stalk. No pollen collected from him but his colors and smell were so nice... The what if's haunt me but I get over them. I then went through and looked at the internodes and colors. Based on feeding and swinging the PH I will watch the leaves. I don't want any leaf curls. So then the next to die was the shortest. I chose between the two shortest but I kept both of them. Their growth pattern was consistent, no matter light intensity they kept consistent internodes and branching... All while keeping in mind the pairing I am making is going toward a heavy indica single cola plant that has virtually zero stretch. It gets more in depth than that and I'm sure you can fill in the gaps there. But like I said there is always the 'what if's' so I think the way you described is the ideal way to hunt down males. This way you can chart how they are truly changing the female structure and go from there.
OK now I can go get some coffee...
Plant more seed, and be free
