The Real Truth about Rootbound and Transplanting

simple adjust for what they need. water more often, using more nutes. not stronger nutes, just more nutes. :)

it obviously can be done, with exceptional results. though it's not something i do intentionally. :eyesmoke:

or maybe i do. what's it really matter? i'm simple here to share my results so others can be more informed. i feel there really is no right or wrong way, as long as the results lead to what was desired. who is anyone else here to tell another how they should grow? all you can really do is offer advice and experiences and then either watch or move on.

Exactly!

It's not something "I" would do intentionally, I try and avoid root bound conditions, but you can deal with the situation if it arises.

We all end up at the same barn, regardless of which path we take.

That plant is nice and healthy no doubt.....but it would have produced alot more weed if it was in a bigger potter

I get nice healthy plants in a 8 inch potter....but the same strain will produce alot more in a 12 inch potter

Well......tendency to root rot, maintenance, 100 lb. weight, cost....

That looks to be a 2 gallon pot and I doubt seriously if you got more than 10 oz. of dried bud.

Then top like I have. I topped Mexican plants numerous times during their life that finished out just inches short of a 6' tall privacy fence. Scared the shit out of me but it worked well. They were planted in good garden soil too.

why exactly would i lie?

there is a FULL grow thread here on it if you'd like me to continue to have to prove myself.

some people just like to argue.

it's a 5 gallon pot sitting on top of a paving stone. i got 1.5 pounds not counting all the popcorn buds used for hash. you can chose to not believe me, but that's on you. i know the truth, it was my plant.

it's over 6 foot tall. this is one of the only pics i have access to unless i dig up the thread. the other computer the grow is on is down. :)

still dont understand how you would go about taking care of a plant like that, in that small of a container. do you need to water multiple times a day? do you fert every water? does it take more time and maintanence to take care of a "rootbound" plant?

when it was mid august and over 100 degrees out i had to water several times a day. i fed as often as the plant could handle. with a small pot over feeding isn't as huge an issue. things happen a lot faster. if over feeding occurs a quick flush and it's fixed.

i can feed heavily in the am, then give them a nice flush of fresh water in the pm. it actually works out rather well. ;)

"rootbound" is just a term. a plant will not commit suicide.

Clearly it does work well ...... for you. But before anyone attempts to consider emulating what you do they should pick up a book on horticulture and read about root shoot balance or ratios.

"rootbound" is just a term.

Root-bound is not just a' term," is is a condition. Saying; rootbound is just a term" is like saying some illness is just a term.

a plant will not commit suicide.

No, a plant will not; "commit suicide," but they will be held back from being all they otherwise would have been and in a worst case scenario they will die, not; "commit suicide;" they will just die. Being an owner of a pot-in-pot nursery, I have seen it happen enough times to know it is a fact.

Might as well be hydro and you are the timer/pump.

Exactly what I've been thinking!
Just look at some roots from certain hydro applications... straight bricks, esp water farms - they are not suffering in the slightest, actually thriving

Root bound plants will have issues if they do not have adequate nutrients and h20 - that is why roots stretch as they do, to gather scarce resources

So, ya, i think the opposite now

And that is the point of this discussion, which we have repeated time and again.

Sounds like a PITA to me, and a drill I would not recommend to anyone. fdd would do well to use a high N slow release encapsulated food. His plants show a N deficiency most likely caused by the amount of water needed to keep the plant alive. A heaping tsp. of a Osmocote like product would not be too much. This is what I buy, which is found in most commercial soil mixes. Mine is a 18-5-8 with micros, 10-12 month. http://www.oxford.net/~vigorocn/webpage/fert/polyon/index.html

:?:hmm I ve been vegging some bubba kush in 1gal coco/perlite mix and was going to flower @ 10" at a density of 2 per sqft or 32 per 4x4 would my plants do good in the 1 gal pots or would they take off if i filled the bed with coco and ditched the pots giving them some more rootspace? (I ve gotten large plants in 1 gal pots before but have always wondered about coco/soil beds or large pots and there potential.:?:

Give it a try! IME more rootspace=more yield. Of course it's never quite that simple, but as a general rule, the bigger the pots, the bigger the plants and the more they SHOULD yield.;-)

Nice plants, BTW. Those are some healthy roots on those babies. :weed:

Most folks worry too much about yields. You should focus only on root and foliage production and maintenance.

In fairness, it is yield most of us are after. I agree that if you concentrate on the roots, foliage and overall health of the plant, the rest should follow.;-)

you talk in circles.

you told me bigger pots would have yielded me more.

you're right BEN. about EVERYTHING.

hope that helps you make it thru your day. ;)

i've shared what i KNOW first hand. my work here is done. unsubscribed.

:eyesmoke:

on a side note:

the plant is yellowing because it's on the FLUSH. that pic was taken just before harvest. :dunce:

you've shared what you think you know through your own expereinces. like the guy up there showing his "rootbound" plants, unless he does something drastic they are going to suffer without a transplant. do you not agree? because i started this thread for people like headbandrocker. it seems to me like you grow a lot of weed, a lot of the time, that maybe its your actual job im not sure.. all i know is to have plants in that small of a container, that big.. you either must have a lot of people helping you take care of them or its your full time job. most of us have work or different things we need to do and we dont have anyone else to take care of our plants for us while we are gone. unless we have as much help/experience as you, im almost 100% positive that inexperienced growers like me would benefit 100% off of transplanting their plants instead of having to come home at lunch to water etc.etc.

with you showing pics like this, and not telling anyone how to fucking do it is detrimental to the cannabis growing community to me. you are trying to tell novice growers that rootbound plants aren't a problem? maybe not for you man, but for the novice growers it is a BIG problem.

go ahead and keep showing pix and telling everyone not to worry about transplanting man, keep on crippling the community

i'm going to come back to answer your question, since you are the thread starter. i'll just add ben to my ignore list now. right next to BT. :)

twice i explained how i do it. now you are attacking me for not explaining, while you throw back the same methods i used to explain how i do it. "you feed and water them as they need to be fed and watered".

i really don't see me making any childish remarks. i do see uncle ben trying to point out the all the negative thing she can. "look his leaves are yellow".

i have NO idea why anyone is trying to argue about this. i thought we came here to share and help. i have shared, and i have tried to help. i have made NO negative comments about repotting. even said i recommend it. yet you all still want to discredit me. i don't get it. seems a lot of egos are involved. which has really RUINED the whole vibe of this site.

i'm done. i tried to share. i have no desire to argue. i hope somebody gained something from this. :peace:
