The Real Truth about Rootbound and Transplanting

I think what makes it worthy of discussion is that this is a forum filled with noobs and graphic illustration of concepts can never be too heavy-handed. I believe your own threads bear that out.
Yep, see the edit on my previous post I just did.

I'm offing them because they have grown too tall and I have others. If I could get rid of the 24 inches of naked stalk between the roots and the foliage I would reconsider. Much better to nurture young whippersnappers than geriatrics. It's an annual plant, after all; 8 months is long enough. Two years into perpetual growing, I realize that mother management is pretty important to a smooth operation in limited space.

As I have said, in a passive hydro setup or an ebb and flow where pots or a tub are used a root-bound condition can occur in hydro growing. Using DWC where much of the roots have lots of room and are in a large open area in the water/nutrient mix it's not something you are going to see.

With your mothers, you can cut off some of the root-ball and then trim away as close to an equal percentage of leaves and branches as possible, or even more, and keep them and they will be fine. As along as you retain a close enough ratio between 'root & shoot' they will go on almost as if nothing ever happened to them. In no time at all you will have new roots and new growth so it is not like you have to 'off them' due to their current condition.

No question about it, rootbound conditions are not good for the plant. This may come off as arrogant, but I'm not sure why this is even worthy of discussion, except to a noob that has little to no experience with plant culture. Again, there are no theories if you understand the growth cycle of a root system.

I've never done more than one upcan. From a 20 oz styro-cup (6.5" tall) or a one gallon to germ in to a final 3-5 gallon pot. It's best to sex in the final pot although it's a PITA as it requires more soil and labor.

You can work around rootbound conditions (regarding nutrient uptake efficiency) somewhat by using a complete food like Dyna-Gro. I did experiments years ago, testing various stuff on Mexican seedlings. One of the experiments was how rootbound conditions affected plant health so I applied Dyna-Gro Foliage Pro. In spite of extremely high temps both night and day, application of pesticides (to test for foliage burn) and other stuff I did to these labrats, they are still healthy at 18" tall in small 20 oz cups. Using tall pots precludes rootbound conditions somewhat.

Would that be one of your crosses you made where Peak 19 was part of it?

yes i posted this thread because its what hurt me the most on my first couple grows, this thread is for newbs and advanced growers alike. as we have seen from everyone posting in this thread there are people who have been growing for years that still think rootbound does not exist, or is not a problem, or does not effect the plants growth very much.

it was originally made for novice growers, but as we all have seen from this thread advanced growers can (and hopefully will) still learn and apply some of this knowledge to make their garden a better place.

if i can help at least one person make growing their garden a little easier, mission accomplished.

I'll be darned. It just sort of had something of a semi-familiar look to it. I hope Jose had the Real McCoy from a bygone era. If so I am envious.
You know what's sad? I bet I've given away about 1,000 Mexican bagseeds over the years, quality stuff, and only one person I know planted them. Guy was over at the TropicalCabana website.

Had I not been lazy and not cleaned out my vegetable drawer in my fridge and ended up with what I believe was an eggplant that turned to ooze that soaked the seeds that were in the same vegetable drawer and ruined them so none of them would pop you could say you knew two people who planted them.

I was not a happy camper when I found what had happened and then that none would pop. But that's life I guess.

Looks like someone needs to check his crisper more than once a year LOL. :)

BT, if you haven't done so already, get some compost from horse stables. Friend of mine whose an eco nut has some of the best, makes it himself on a large scale. NPK values of 13-5-8 with great micros. Let's put it this way, this is my best veggie garden in 40 years of gardening. I shudder to think what it would do if we got rain instead of using my hard well water. We're in another La Nina induced severe drought stage with no rainfall since December and very little since October of last year.

What can I say, I'm an old guy that lives alone. Once I was checking out my fridge looking for a snack and found what I thought might be a Chia pet. Then I realized it was what was left of my Thanksgiving turkey.

Oh man, that reminds me... A few weeks ago I woke up in the middle of the night hungry as a wolf, I stumbled out to the kitchen looking for something to chow. I opened the fridge, and to my surprise I found a new (so I thought) unopened carrot cake, SCORE! I didn't turn the light on, just left the fridge door open so I could see enough to cut a piece. I proceeded to woof down that piece of cake like a fat kid sneaking a kit kat, then I thought hmmm, that tastes a little different than I remember, oh well. Back to bed.

The next evening I went back to the kitchen to get another piece of cake, and asked my better half when she bought it. "I didn't buy a carrot cake" came the reply... Huh? I open the fridge, pull it out, "then what it this?" I ask. "THAT, is the one you wouldn't let me throw away like a month ago", "Oh" I said. I opened it and the thing had so many different color mold spots all over the icing I don't know how I survived that without getting sick.

I've got another, but one that shouldn't have happened. I bought some yogurt and I checked the date on all of them and they should have all been fresh.

The first one I opened .. surprise! It was like a 'pop shot; from a martian porn flick. My face was covered in a thick green goo. The container wasn't swollen up, there were no signs it was bad, but it had 'turned' and it was nasty.

The evidence is mounting. You just needed a arsehole to say it wasn't so ;)

I love this thread! Not sure why it's got a shity rating.?.? It's slowly but surely proving it's intended point.
