The Lazarus Grow: my first grow in almost 18 years

Fo' sho'. I don't have the guts to grow, so I'm just a spectator here. :peace:

We had a stretch of pretty cold weather, so I lowered the lights to keep everyone warm. I am glad I did, because the stretching would be much worse.

I figured this light would be adequate for newly sprouted plants, but I was apparently wrong. The light is maybe 6” away, which should be sufficient to fry them, but you can see what’s going on.
Also, check out this little yellow mutant! It’s a white rhino, and I will probably have to cull it, but for now it’s chugging right along.

As you can see, there is absolutely no way that this kind of light will be sufficient to veg and flower these guys. That’s a pretty big problem. I was told that this kind of light was the equivalent of a 1000w HPS, which it plainly isn’t.

Looks like I am going back to the basics: ditch the LEDs and reinstall HPS lights like I had before. Two or three 400w HPS in that closet (and a ventilation system) will grow some serious nugs
I just swapped out HPS to a led for seedlings and veg . What I found is lowering for added heat fixes the heat issue it blast to much light for seedlings . Does your light have a dimming feature ?
That light is capable of seedling lighting easily. In my opinion lol you know how everyone has an opinion and most suck but . I would think about raising the light some .Too much light can cause bleaching and looks similar to your one plant that’s very pale . I think you would be better off to raise the light , maybe foliage feed with some weak kelp . If your temps are too low Maybe mount your light in a small cabinet ?
My light was at 15 percent in week one and hanging too close . If the light is not dimmable raising to 2-3 feet maybe.
I hope you get it dialed in , great seeing old heads coming back to the scene .

This light isn’t adjustable. I will be ordering a HPS replacement this week, and it comes with a MH bulb as well so I can use it for veg. I’m adding new gear as quickly as I can, but it does take some time to save up to get everything.

(I’m in an illegal state and unable to move, sadly.) But, I need medicine and this is the only way I can get it.
Wow, that's a bummer. Mine's legal and I still don't have the guts. Altho it's not
legal to grow here unless you prove you have a medical condition. Your state won't
allow medical growing? Most states do. Make sure if it does or not. :peace:

Nothing wrong with HID lighting . I found for me LED will work great During summer . Winter grows I think if your in a cold climate HID work best . I had to add heat to my room during the cold months with LED . I will never give up my old magnetic ballast HID fixtures .
they last forever .Also with vented hoods you can scrub for smell and remove heat if needed , with LED you have to run a scrubber in the room if small is an issue .

I’m in Kansas. It’s a backwards state still stuck in the 1870s. I’m most likely going to die a criminal, because I doubt that cannabis will ever be legalized in my lifetime here.

The authorities here have actually gone after a terminally ill cancer patient: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/dec/28/police-cannabis-citation-dying-cancer-patient-kansas

…and now they’re going after Delta 8:

Oh, and they busted a lady who had some weed- then refused to give her her prescription medication and let her die in jail: https://www.kmbc.com/article/no-charges-planned-in-kc-woman-s-jail-death/3685713

I figure that as long as I don’t draw attention to myself, I’m relatively safe…except for one thing: fire. A fire is my biggest nightmare. I have a smoke alarm in the room, and have a fire extinguisher on hand. That’s another reason why I am nervous about led lights, they’ve been known to malfunction. HPS lights are simpler and imo much safer if engineered and installed properly.

My room was originally built to accommodate air cooled hoods, as well as a carbon scrubber. I was running two systems: the scrubber was run by a dedicated temperature controller on its own circuit and kicked on and off as needed, and the blower for my hoods was on the same circuit as my lights as a “constant on”- when the lights kicked on, so did the blower. It vented directly into the attic, which in retrospect was not a good idea (I later found out from a friend in law enforcement that the police had detected a heat signature for my house, but didn’t have enough evidence to obtain a warrant).

I’m going to try and duplicate the original setup, but I am probably going to redo the exhaust setup for my lights.

Kansas, wow. It's legal in like 37 states, but not there, not yet anyhow:

Yup, and it’s very unlikely to change. The staunch anti everything crowd is in control, at least for now.

Oh, yeah, almost forgot- here’s a final bit of fuckery the authorities can throw at you (in addition to straight up stealing everything you own via asset forfeiture):

That’s right, you have to buy a tax stamp…and yes, they absolutely will nail you to the cross for not having one.

I hate it here, but I can’t afford to go elsewhere.

So, tonight is a New Supermoon- which means that I’m trying another shot at getting my old seeds to germinate. The previous attempts were all dismal failures.

This time, however, I’m using the cute little mini greenhouses that @Spiderfarmerled very kindly sent me, and an AC Infinity heating mat. I put a couple of pinches of potting mix in the bottom of each cell, and topped it up with plain vermiculite.

The seeds were soaked overnight in warm water with a little bit of H2O2, then planted into the vermiculite and gently watered in with warm water + h2o2. I will be installing a 60w LED for them tonight, too.

And now we wait…

I’m dropping a second batch of seeds, and just mixed up the soaking solution (1/2 tsp molasses and brown sugar in 1/2 cup boiling water). As soon as it cools down a bit, I will add a teaspoon of H2O2 and let the seeds soak until they sink.

I forgot to mention that I am scuffing the edges of each seed shell with a fine nail file before soaking them.

These are all various old Black Mamba x Bogglegum crosses that I made nearly 20 years ago, so I am hoping for something awesome.

I remember you! Weren’t you on the original PlanetGanja? I never got into the whole shark tank thing, but I swear until the day I fucking die I will hold a grudge against “Ethical Grower” for making me freak out and trash my entire grow. I hope karma pays him a visit.
I remember those gypsy nirvana stash boxes... back in 2006ish on the original seedbay...

I have a bunch of old seeds, like 40 kinds or so, from back in 2008-2013ish, some i made myself. I tried a few and a no go also, but there's plenty more to check... i just have no time/space with all this other stuff i have going now... i will try your method when i do...

will be watching for sure...

I just hope that this works. Maybe having the heat mat, humidity dome etc will do the trick. I literally tried magic, and that didn’t work either lol :leaf:

The first batch of seeds are planted in the right tray, and the left one is waiting to be planted. The little cups with the seeds are in between. I have a bunch of [Black Mamba x Bogglegum] x AK47 going, so wish me luck…that stuff kicked my ass ages ago

Lot of redheads in Kansas why is that?

Today was moving day, time to transplant!

The two autos and the feminized one went into three gallon pots, and everyone else went into two gallon pots.

I am using Promix BX + bio fungicide and mycorrhizae, with Osmocote mixed in. I also mixed up a quick drench with Bti to help prevent gnats, and GH nutrients to get them over the hump.

There is a 400w HPS/MH by iPower, with a @Spiderfarmerled 100w on one side and a generic 100w on the other. The ballast is digital, so I can turn down the bulb to 150w. In a week, I’ll bump it up a notch- and weekly after that until it’s time to flip.

This is the first time I’ve actually run all the equipment, so I’m a bit nervous. There’s a dedicated smoke detector in the room, just in case. I want it to come up to operating temperature and see how much the room heats up with the door closed.D00A285A-517D-4033-8131-194AEDF78D2B.jpeg

I’m very sad to report that once again, the seed sprouting efforts were in vain. No signs of life, and I’m starting to see a few sneaky fungus gnats- never a good sign.

Moving on, my garden is starting to thrive.

The kids are digging the new setup, they’ve visibly doubled in size in just a week. Their roots are cool, and the warmth is great for their foliage. I’m doing a monthly dose of GH nutes, and biweekly 32oz measured watering routine.

Today is their 5th week, so it is time to start looking for preflowers. I’m seeing some potential males, a few females and the rest just aren’t ready yet. I will check them next week when I raise the lights and bump up the voltage another click. When they hit 8 weeks, they will hit maximum voltage and get the flip.

I have an extension cord on order, and I think maybe this fall I’ll get an electrician buddy to install a plug and hardwire one of those intermat timers.

I'd ditch the domes for seedlings they really harbor pathogens

The trick is to use a humidifier so you can properly water them IMO

It was recently I realized that the dome is
really for making cuttings or if you can't get your humidity up. If you have to use it you need to intermittently take the dome off and slowly open up the vents more instead of just taking the dome off they will dampen off

Some tricks for old seed stock
Scuff with sand paper (I use a film canister and shake)
H202+h20 mix pre soak (kills bad stuff on seed)
Soak in water for one day poke it until it falls to the bottom
Plant it and be sure to water properly. A little myco/ewc is good for seedlings

welcome back I hope your grow goes smooth!

Today marks week 6 of veg. Time to start reducing the photoperiod from 24/0 to 18/6. Next week, I will reduce the time further to 14/10- and the week after that is when I plan on flipping over to 12/12.

During these last two weeks of veg, I will start looking closely at the plants and start culling unwanted males.
