Just putting together an ebike from parts now. Found this frame in the creek all corroded. Took it home, gave it a hit with steel wool and threw some spare parts on it. I don't know what it actually is, but it has a nice narrow silverfish mount and cable routing under the bb.

Has a 750w rated rear hub motor with 155mm spacing, a 48v 21ah battery and a KT 48v 25a controller. Picked up a new suntour fork of gumtree for $30. Currently has a 9spd setup but have a sram 10spd kit here (new X5 kit) with 11-40t screw on freewheel.

Have a trip planned from Brisbane to Yarraman in a few weeks and looking forward to a good getaway.

Just waiting on the 1-4 cable so I can set it up. Should be looking at 120km range with light pedal assist, just need to set up a few 12v solar panels in series to charge when off the beaten path.

Personally, I have recently gotten into Ebikes. I already built a cruiser with a 1000w front hub motor and an 18ah battery. But now I'm looking into building a "gravel" bike. Fat tire 7 speed with the capability to ride on gravel roads, fire breaks, the beach, etc. It will also be a powered bike, but with a mid-drive motor powering the drivetrain eventually to get the maximum amount of torque out of it.


Oh, mods, please don't move this to the Fitness section. You know as well as I do that that is a death sentence for a thread here on RIU...lol

So fast!! Even though the 30kg bike requires about 20-25% more power to maintain the same speed when climbing than a light road bike, and I've never been fast up the hills, my average speeds are a lot higher now. I laugh at weight weenies as I blow past them. People vastly overestimate the effect of weight (only matters on hills) and underestimate the effect of aero, but aero is king. ...or perhaps "there's no replacement for a lack of air displacement."

Can't agree more with the weight obsession. One of my riding buddies is 107kg, 6 foot 2 and takes half of his rotor bolts off and uses alloy bolts for his stem and brake mounts. On top of the 20kg he could lose, he also jacks up the handlebars (60mm rise), shortened the stem to 40mm and added 30mm to his XC hardtails fork. Hes so upright its almost bizarre. He rolls to a stop in a matter of meters with his terribly adjusted brakes and windbreaker riding position.

Just seems paradoxical to worry about the weight of tyres, bolts and rotors, but ignore the terrible riding position aero wise and the excess 20kg Hes carrying around. Newest pursuit is stripping the frame and sanding the welds flat instead of losing weight, adjusting his brakes and riding position.

but I can't speak. look at the stupid shit I do to my bike. it's just not weight related. Just can't help but turn every bike into a wannabe street thrash/dh bike. I even purchased a 700c hybrid bike to throw an 80mm boost fork on it, throw on a 60mm stem, 780mm risers, replace the 33c tyres with 47c/45c and throw on a 32t narrow wide on the front with a short cage x.7 derailleur rear. It's just as bizarre.
