stealth under-bed grow, LST, horizontal, less than 1ft in height!

hi again!

I've started a thread on the subject of horizontal growing in heights of less than 1 ft, as i cant find any info on things like under-bed grows.

i have been very interested in starting an indoor stealth grow of my own but, i dont have a suitable closet/wardrobe or PC cabinet. Instead i was looking into growing under my bed, training the plants to grow horizontally along a grid inside a foil lined 'coffin'. i have seen threads with minimal discussion on the matter but no pictures or plans, so i figured i try to get some 'proper' information on the matter.

additionally, can any uk growers out there recommend good readily available fertiliser (preferably organic), and a good strain for this method of growing.

ill try to get a diagram of my intended set up on the thread too, although i made one on paint and couldn't get the dimensions down enough to still make it legible.

any and all help greatly appreciated with this niche corner of cultivation

:peace: of cake!

right, here is the cross section view of my (or probably someone elses too) idea!

i think its pretty self explanitory!

any Q's ask away!

NB; i have omitted extraction and ventilation because i couldnt be arsed to spend ages on paint! i think i will run a carbon filter in the box linked to a bathroom extractor and then have an inlet and air distribution fan. the top of the box would be removable so the plant can be worked on from above. i only plan on growing one or two, it depends on how much room each plant takes up when flattened out on the grid. if necessary, i will do a top down view too so you can see the fan/filter/light layout better.

Looks like you've got a pretty interesting idea there. I'll be keeping an eye on this one to see how it turns out. I'm a new grower myself, but I noticed you said "foil lined coffin", and just wanted to let you know that you are going to be better off just painting the inside white. Everything I have read has told me to stay away from foil at all costs. Good Luck!

thanks for the feedback guys, can i ask why you dislike foil so much? i had read that its goo.d for light coverage. but what do i know, im new to growing?! thanks again!

ok, i have finished my design and will give a description then update when it is built with some pictures.

the box will be 5ft long, 2ft wide and 10 inch high (external dimensions) made from half inch MDF board. i will have 3 pairs of 4 foot fluorescent lights running equally spaced along its length. i want to use 9x9x9 square pots and grow the seedling out of a 1 inch diameter hole in the side of the pot so i can water them through the top of the pots when the right way up, i will start the seedling off with the pot on its side (out of the grow box) then, when the seedling is big enough i will put the pots in the grow box and the seedling will be growing out the side of the pot and towards the grid and lights! simple! i will have the grid suspended an inch or so above the grow box floor to aid ventilation and will be checking up on the progress every day to keep the plant securely on the grid, routing all the branches parallel with the lights.
i plan to ventilate with a pair of high flow bathroom extractor fans in a push-pull set up, the outlet fan will exhaust through a carbon filter and the inlet fan plumbed to duct incoming air under the grid (i hope this will increase respiration by supplying fresh air to the stomata).

i will be growing with a sativa dominant strain (but not sure which one yet) as i reckon this will fill my 4 foot length of growing space nicely.

so there are the confirmed details, i await advice from you guys now on any flaws you may have spotted, specific strains to use and fertiliser recommendations. you have until wednesday because that's when i get paid and will be buying the parts!

again, feel free to ask questions.

peace from H&M ill have the pictures up asap!!

That's neat. Looks like its gonna be a really great project. Are you going to keep a journal on here? I would love to subscribe and see how it turns out. I think it would be cool to have a bunch of people do different weird experiments and keep up to date. One person can only do one experiment at a time, or maybe a few. Right now i have a budding plant that got too tall for my small Cfl space and the branches are all sideways now. The buds have started growing really funny lol....hold on ill make a paint image..one sec...:P.. ok there we go, the buds are growing like I have masterfully drawn there. I guess though cfls will create deformity like that haha. ANYWAYS sorry I just went on a rant there. Awesome project. +rep to you!:peace::joint:

Everything I have read say's to stay away from foil because it does not reflect light evenly and can cause hot spots in your grow space. I used foil my first couple of times cause I thought,"Hey, it's shiny, it'll work? I don't have any solid evidence personally, but I haven't had any problems using plain white walls.
As for the type of plant, I would think you might try to stick with an india as opposed to the sativa. Sativa's tend to be taller and lankier. You should take a look at the threads on here about supercropping and lst. It should be helpful in your grow.

thanks for the advice man, rep up! my thoughts were that indica may be too bushy for the space and the lanky sativa would be better for airflow. plus i generally get quite stony weed from my dealer and wanted something more uppy. that said, if an indica is better suited to novice growers like myself then ill go with that. opinions??

you could make the legs of your bed a bit longer give yourself another inch of 2

or make them 4 foot long wit a little ladder to get in to bed lol:mrgreen:

way ahead of you dude! it went on my to-do list today, its so i can slide it out from under my bed, only problem is its supposed to be stealth so my dad doesnt find out. 4 foot extensions might be a giveaway! ill see how workable 2 or 3 inches is, other wise it means lifting my bed up a few inches to get the box under the side rails, which could be noisy while i'm supposed to be sleeping! that said, i could put my trolley jack under there!

You might try AK-47. It is strong and gives you more of that "uppy" high your looking for. It does, however, make one helluva stink so you will need to pay close attention to odor control unless less you want ur old man asking why the hell it smells like a skunk's nest in your room. lol. A simple activated carbon filter attached to your exhaust fan should do the trick. Can't wait to see some pics of the setup and how this is going to play out. Good luck again and thanks for the rep!

i wouldnt grow in your paerents gaff!
he will kick your ass WHEN he finds out
how old are you man?

20, personally, i like the challenge, but my dad doesnt know enough about drugs to detect the signs. Eg- he came home one morning after working away coz he felt sick and ALL my rolling gear was on the table from the night before, including over 150 seeds (one of which is in my garden growin!). he said 'what were all those seeds on the table, cannabis? i said 'dad you cant smoke cannabis seeds' to which he replied 'you seem to know enough about it'. i said we learned it on the dare campaign!!! he hasn't said any thing since and i blaze reg. any way, would he want me buying from a dealer or making it myself under my own quality control? obviously he wouldn't want me to at all but he isn't in a position to tell me what i can and cant do or what i can and cant put in my body.

that aside, hes not going to find it anyway!!

thanks for the AK recommendation BA, the carbon filter goes without saying!!

No problem. This kinda reminds me of my first grow at my parents house. lol. I was 16 and had 4 3ft plants just sitting out in the open down in the basement. I had my parents convinced I was growing catnip for the family pets. About 5 weeks into flowering I found my plants all stomped into the ground. I guess the smell reminded him of his hippy days or something. haha. Learning experience. Cover your tracks and never rely on someone elses ignorance.

let us know if u start a grow journal or u guna put your grow on this thread, cos im really interested in how this will turn out.
