Specs And Comparisons For 600w HPS Bulbs

Ive had my Lumatek 600w bulb running now for about 15 hours, and I just now took some readings.

The average output in F.C. for the Lumatek was 3715 F.C. at 18 inches high over 3 x 3 area. The ushio was 3778, so pretty damned close. The highest rated spot under the lamp maxed out at 7660 F.C. Thats actually higher than the Ushio, which had peaked at 7300 under the bulb. Its a bit surprising it fared slightly worse when it came to average output.

Someone may loan me a Quantum Meter so I can better accurately measure the true PAR values. Then I will really know whether Ushio or Lumatek is better. It will be a month before I could possibly do this. If I do get to use the meter, then I will report back.

JUST E-MAILED LUMATEK and this is what they sent me

The new Lumatek bulbs are one of the brightest on the market. Even brighter than the Hortilux. The Lumatek bulb has a great red with the perfect amount of blue that plants need for optimum growth. Our bulb has proven reliability on our digital ballast and is guaranteed to give you fantastic results.
He also gave me the chart below and specs of the lamp. Big thanks to John at lumatek

and one of them did this and almost burnt down my house
Damn I'm glad everything's alright....thanks for the heads up on the potential bad build quality...I've had a few lumatek ballasts die on me, although they were the older generation, not these new 'super lumens' ones...

I like the Ushio HiLux bulb that I just bought from a local shop.

It's really bright and if their spectral distribution graph isn't just bullshit it provides an acceptable amount of blueish light for a HPS.

I also like that it is made in Germany and not China. Nothing against China but there are quite a few Chinese manufacturers who have less then effective quality controls.

I switched from a 400w watt so I can't tell how good it is in comparison to other 600w bulbs and I haven't had it long enough to know it's life span.

At any rate my plants have responded well to it and I will post if anything happens.

The Ushio's do seem awesome, I think I'll get em for next round, I've been burning the same bulbs for 3 cycles, and a few were used even before that. They are the Agrosun and Ultrasun bulbs. And they grew some dankity dank.

just fired up my brand new 600w lumatek HPS bulbs and wow there bright it also seems like the light is whiter than my sunmaster bulb(witch has a really yellow light).. but this comparison is not really fair cause my sunmaster is almost a year old
Nah in fact Sunmaster is hotter than hortilux in the kelvin scale to the naked eye, I've tried both in my 1000W system. The sunmaster burnt after 2 weeks btw, then the Hortilux came in and it was like you said, whiter.

I also think you should add the GrowBright 600W Hps bulb. It's very good and cheap!

Sube'd plus reps to the ushio bulbs..accring to some resources there one of the best bulbs n do well with lumatek ballast.. Props to the germans

you can have a 600 watt and dim it to 400 with the switch as for just getting a 400, i think you can do that but im not sure and my room is dark right now... i know it says on the ballast but i will have to check tomorrow morning....ill post it tomorrow
ALWAYS match voltage to your bulb..whenu use a dimmer u lose efficiency..about 30%..so always match bulb watt to ballst watt..

i know this thread is old but i wanted to chime in and save some headaches possibly.

Ive had a 600 hps lumatek eballast since about 2007. it really only has been used mostly in the past 3 years.
I had no idea at all that i needed bulbs that were compatible with the ballast. stupid ass htg supply gave me a bulb that blew right away because it was the WRONG type of bulb for the digital lumatek ballast.
I actually went thru about 3 more bulbs, including a couple expensive SolarMax bulbs, until someone talked to me at a shop about it. the guy was very nice and helpful, he explained that my lumatek ballast is basically in a class of its own when it comes to ballasts. because of that, some bulbs just dont work good with it, usually cheap ones. He told me i needed a bulb that is designed to be used with a digital ballast.
he showed me a couple different brands, told me what makes them good choices and all. digilux, lumatek, ushio, etc etc.
the guy kinda up-sold the eye hortilux super hps tho... he said it honestly puts out more useable light even tho the lumens are lower. he also re-assured me that he has had very few people complain about the hortilux bulbs blowing or breaking, which was a huge concern for me. i started to think, well crap i bet this is just the bulb he makes the most cash off of. then he offers to drop $30 off the price, making it under 100 out the door. so then i was fairly certain that the guy was really just trying to help, and i bought the eye hortlux super hps.

almost 1.5 years later that same bulb is doing very good. it has gone thru a TON of issues with electricity and even being bumped around badly. i have no idea what has made this bulb so damn reliable, but im very happy with it. i have people tell me all the time not to spend the $$ on eye hortilux, but honestly ive not had a better experience with any other brand of bulb.
i do really want to try a lumatek bulb too and compare. i think the lumatek was the only other bulb i looked into that had any sort of track record on durability, and life of the bulb.

btw digital ballasts are the only way to go... i hate magnetic ballasts now. i feel digital ballasts are also safer to use.
