Well I saw some black bugs crawling and flying around the lower part of the plants today. I don't know how I missed it earlier.

It looks like a flying aphid or gnat. The large ones are crawling and flying around at the base of the plants and I see some more winged ones stuck to the lowest buds with small black specks close bye. I am assuming they are the babies. Check out the pictures attached. I do not see any bugs on the upper buds.

I am at the first day of week 4 into flowering and was thinking of spraying the lower part of the plants with neem oil. I could avoid the buds or only spray the visibly infected buds. I would spray only lower leaves and stems of the infected area and then all around the base of the other plants. I wouldn't be upset to lose the lower small buds to save the crop. I could just cut the infected buds off.

I also have a pyrethrum TR bomb. I could let that go off with the lights and fans off.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Man, that's a bummer. I have no idea what to do... hopefully someone will chime in. If not I hope you find some answers.... those buds are looking great, wouldn't want anything too bad to happen.

Good luck.

Hey Jigfresh,

Thanks for stopping bye. I understand how much time you and many other people devote to keeping their journals up to date and I appreciate it very much.

After some more research I believe them to be winged aphids. I sprayed again with insecticidal soap but it only slowed them down and most likely will ruin the buds which were sprayed.

During their night time I turned off the main exhaust and put in a No Pest Strip. When the lights go on I turn on the exhaust then remove and plastic bag the No Pest Strip.

I know they are toxic but I am in week 4 of flower so it has 4-6 weeks to air out. Do you think it is worth the risk?

Should I use a pyrethrum bomb?

I believe the soap will ruin the lower buds which is ok, they are the fluffy small ones. Should I just cut them off?

This is my first grow and I would hate for it to become infested with sap suckers.

Any feed back is welcome!

Hey Aaron,

I feel for ya. Dam bugs.
In my previous grows I have battled spider mites. I used safers spray up to 6 weeks in flower with no side effects but I hit them with water the next day.

In your case I think the pest strip and a few yellow stickys will do the job though.

Yes, I see the difference between our grows. Now I realize I vegged a bit long for this style grow but I think I will manage. No topping/pruning this time around either.

The train wreck is doing fine but the widows are taking there time.
What could be the difference between our grows is the plant mass. By vegging longer I have built a larger mass and it could be the reason. I don't know, another thing, you have hydroton and I don't. Maybe when the water dries it leaves behind nutrients in the hydroton... this is my first aero grow. I think I am going to have some pretty big buds. Only time will tell.

Hey Cruzer,
Thanks for stopping bye.
I'm going to put a mosquito dunk in the reservoir for fungus gnats and then use a pyrethrum spray for the aphids. I think things are under control and doing well.
Your doing good work and documenting it very well. I need to make more time for this journal.

Looking good man.
Yea, I get better pics with flash sometimes too.
Thanks Cruzer,
I changed the rez last night and mixed up a weaker batch of nutrients. I think I was burning them a little both with the heat lately and the high nutes. I noticed the flowers stretching also. The leaves out of the flowers where curling down. The fan leaves looked great.
I will take more pics tonight.

Hmm what week of flowering are you at?
Curling and yellowing leaves are a normal sign of flowering.. if your plants were doing fine under the previous level of nutes, then there shouldn't be any reason to change it other then for flushing.
I'll check your answer and pics tonight and tell you what I think.. ;)
Btw. the plants are really looking nice..
Peace!

Thanks for stopping bye.

I included pictures of the flowers stretching. I am in the later part of week six.
I mixed a slightly weaker batch of nutrients. I use tap water so my base PPM in around 350-400. The PPM is now at 1300. It was 1700-1900 before. The air temp is too hot here. The grow area is 80F and the flower tops are 82F, I use a temp gun. The PH is 5.8 and the reservoir is 74-77F. I use 1L frozen bottles to bring the temp down.

Thanks. It's strange how the flower tops stretched. I raised the lights because of the heat. Maybe it caused the stretch.

This is a picture from when I constructed the shelf to hold the flood trays. I got this idea from Jigfesh's journal.

Hey do you know the rule about ppm levels changing tells you what your plants want.

If you start at 1200 ppm and the next day its 1300, that means the plants want more water than nutes, so the ratio goes up. So you are using too much.

If it goes down, they are really hungry for nutes, not using enough.

Stays the same.... just right.

I wouldn't say you are hurting or burning the plants where you have it now... just using some extra mL of nutrient solution and making the cure that much more important.

Hey Jig
Thanks for stopping bye. I do remember the rule about the nutes. When I left town a couple weeks ago the levels went way up to 2000PPM and the meter doesn't read over that. When I got back I added water and then changed the reservoir soon after.
I hope they can survive the heat down here. I point a fan at the lights when on at night.

Speaking of curing, I was planning on letting them hang in a closet or in a drying box with a fan for a week. I have heard of burping jars but have not read up about it yet.

For drying you may not need a fan... too much wind will dry them out too quick. Depends on humidity though.

Curing: All it is... after things dry, stick em in a mason jar, and once a day open them for 5 minutes or so, enough to let the air become fresh inside and close back up.

It's truly amazing the difference a cure makes. Like just thinking about it, it's like how much difference can it make, but WOW. When you dry the bud and smoke it... way harsh. Put it in a jar for 24hours or so and you wouldn't beleive the difference. I don't know the science behind it but it's wild how much better it makes the smoke.

Do you continue to burp your jars from your grows 1, 1.2 and 2.0?
