Smell leak... ventilation problem?

Hi,

I'm having trouble with smell leaking from the groom. I use an 8'' Rhino Filter (rated for the Correct fan) and RVK 8'' L1 Fan on a climate controller, also an RVK 6'' L1 Intake fan, and small passive intake to stop too strong negative pressure. The main fan is sucking the air through the filter and pushing through about 6m of ducting outside.

Room is: 2.9m x 2.75m x 2.5m (LWH)

There seems to be a faint smell leaking from duct exit point outside, the filter and fan are new and I can't figure out what's happening?

I'm thinking extraction could be oversized, but it's run on a climate controller and only usually runs from 30%-90% max speed.

Humidity is at 55-62% during daytimes when smell was noticed and rises a bit more at night.
Can't find any leaks in ducting either.. dodgy filter possibly?
Or fan speed running too low?

Any help would be appreciated thanks

Where is the intake located?

@hotrodharley
Intake draws in fresh air from outside and dumps at low level pointing up at 45degree.

Also have one row of air-cooled hoods each side, 1 fan per side pushing air over hoods
Fan>Hood>Hood>Exit

These are dimmed to 50% to allow a bit of extra heat in room as it's not been too warm.

Does your controller every turn the scrubber off? Where is the hoods exhausted, inside or outside the room? Is the intake reduced with the extraction?

The intake is higher than the exhaust?

What stage of flower are your plants in? If they really stink you can still get smell even with a carbon filter.

@hotrodharley
Exhaust fan + filter are high level centre of room and intake is at the bottom of the room

@upnsmoke13
The hoods extract ourside, they are both on a sealed loop seperate from the room. Any air should be pushed out of the hoods if anything as im not sucking air through them.

And yeah both fans plugged into climate control, both speed up/slow down at rhe same rate, the lowest speed they go is 30% but always stay on

@xtsho
Week 7 flower, yeah think this could be another possibility... dont want to fork out on a new filter and it not fix it! unfortunately have at least 2weeks + a flush left :/

Any suggestions on neutralizing the smell a bit?

thanks for the replies

Have just read a few posts about rhino filters failing later on in flower, apparently not as good as they used to be.... I’m behind with the times!

Anyone had experience with phresh / Mountain air filters? Bit More pricey but I’m happy to pay if it’s worth it. :confused:

I've had good luck with Phresh & Black Ops filters. Hopefully you'll get this sorted quick, nothing like worrying about which way the wind blows! Good luck!

What exactly are the cfm ratings for both the fan and filter? And yes, Phresh are worth the $$. Spend the few extra bucks if stealth is paramount.

Yes the paranoia is kicking in!

Fan is 1008 m3/hr and filter 1125 m3/hr

Damn gna have to take the plunge I guess, got to be done.

Double check ALL your connections & be sure your room has negative pressure. I wouldn't have a passive vent with powered intakes being variable! How old is the Rhino Filter?

Yeah ill have to check tonight before i buy anything! Yeah the neg pressure was too much i couldnt get the door open! So added a small adjustable vent

@upnsmoke13 Filter is only 11 weeks old too

I have heard similar things but always used rhino pro 8" and never had an issue. I change them once a year but have had them running for 2 year before and still no smell.

What exact ducting are you using?

Edit, heard very good things about mountain air btw.
Edit 2, my question about ducting is only important if there is duct between fan and filter.

@coreywebster yeah i have the Same but guess i got some bad luck. Standard black ducting, checked for leaks couldnt find anything!

Changed to Phresh filter all seems to be good now, apart from my wallet
Ah well at least the problem got solved. Reason I asked about ducting is I have seen some folks selling the perforated interior of acoustic duct as proper ducting which it isn't meant for..

Glad you got it sorted out though.. Must of been a poorly filled filter.
