Not in my opinion, I feel the state government should create jobs on a local level specifically designed to require minimal education and tailored to support disabled or special workers with a public transportation system to and from places of public employment and allow citizens to preform a valuable task in reward for their handouts...... except now they are not handouts, it is earned and the whole state will benefit from the exchange.

I whole heartedly agree, this would also give the majority of them a reason to better themselves instead of sitting around doing nothing.

In my opinion, there should be state and federal support for such a program. It's a great idea and something I would support whole-heartedly. I remember the shame I felt when I was getting unemployment. I tried so hard to get a job but for over two years it just wasn't possible. I would have loved to work for my unemployment. It would have given me a sense of worth and purpose. I'm perfectly happy working again and will do anything within my power to never be on unemployment again. It was humiliating.

I would also increase the amount paid by these jobs to be slightly more than current welfare at the time of implementation, furthermore over time I would reduce the restrictions on the jobs and include a number of government entitlement programs into the system as it grew. Eventually i would hope to provide a back fall for the entire nation through government aid that allowed citizens to work for the good of the nation during the transitional periods between jobs or during a disability.
Obviously this is not a fix all but i believe that such a system would effectively eliminate the problems faced by our current welfare system and greatly reduce the total loss of the system while not denying aid to any portion of the population.

I'm sorry, i assumed people with kids are the ones that need the most help.
specially with food.
I would feel less sorry for someone without kids.
This is definitely the start of an idea I could warp my head around.
A system like this would benefit all, I know the government isn't going to eliminate income taxes anytime soon.
At least I would feel my money is going towards something good.

I see no problem with the idea of making people work - There will always be folks that would sooner lose an arm than go to work and others that secure their income with a baby so we'll never get to them without some major Draconian measures. There are however a lot of people who don't go to work simply because they can!
Considering that we already discriminate between those who play the system for keeps and those who are just dabbling, why not set the dabblers to something more useful? Three tiers:
A) You turn up you do your work you go home - Full income with subsidy for being awesome if you are.
B) You turn up and piss about you get a shitty report - 80% income no benefits.
C) You fuck it off and stay home to get wasted - They fuck you off.
There is an argument that there are only shitty jobs to do but there ARE shitty jobs to do - maybe actually having to do them will lower peeps expectation of 40k a year with their "I failed high school" grades? I agree with the previous poster who said

on the subject of work, and community, and locking things up, you guys should read the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, which presents a view of our Taker society that most don't think about. I'm disappointed that people who seem so enlightened (just by being members of a high-minded community like rollitup - maybe i assume . . .) are so willing to put down and judge those who are disenfranchised in our society. Once you read this book, let me know and maybe we can start a discussion.

Generally speaking you are right, but the system as we know it breeds abuse, many recipients take advantage of social assistance programs and spoil it for the ones who truly need it.

how do you feel about me? I attended 5 years at NCSU with a dual major and mechanical eng & graphics design (all being paid for from my pocket because the gov told me to go fuck myself, being a single white male is not all flowers and rainbows like people seem to think, apparently some people that shared my same demographic enjoyed more entailment than there peers some time in the past and its only "fair" that i pay for it now), and work 8-5, 5 days a week since the day I graduated, I still can't afford to have a kid.
so because i am responsible and want to wait to have a kid until i can afford it and give it a good life, i should never get to because it is my duty to help support yours that you had when you were 17 and couldn't keep your junk in your pants and can't even feed?
That's what bothers me about the new American mentality. No on wants to take responsibility for there own actions and lives. They never know how bad it is hurting the ones supporting them, because we manage our incomes and budget ourselves to survive on what we have too. We don't look poor because we don't let ourselves get "poor" we do without and make what we have do because someone has to or we will all starve. We live a little hungry all week so that we still have some left on Friday and Staurday, some people eat all they want, and then bum off other the rest of the week.

I took zer0ed point as in perhaps she had a deadbeat husband who abandoned the family or maybe she made a mistake as a kid (we're all guilty of that) and is paying for it while she is trying to make amends with her future.

I worked through college, granted the educational part was paid for by our Government (bar a small yearly "registration fee") but one should learn to support themselves from a young age for living expenses.

i see what you mean i agree to some degree, but it still sux when you see people on welfare eating better then you, dressing better then you, and driving nicer cars then you, when you have to get up a 7am every morning and go to work. i worked at a grocery store during college, so i got to see what people bought, wore and loaded it into, and i also got to see how each of them paid.
