Daddy was a longshoreman, and nonunion guys could catch on at the docks if there was extra spots. I used to go to work with him, but if you didn't catch on, you had all day to kill (or hitch 50 miles home). One day when I didn't catch on, I spend the day with another unlucky guy who lived in a one room apartment on the beach. The room was small, but every inch of wall space was taken up by albums. My friend played three different cuts of this song for me that day.
