Regular seeds question

Hi all, noob question; as I don't know anybody who happens to grows their own, so I decided to buy some seeds. I purchased 10x Northern Lights from sensi, regular seeds, as I would like to make seeds for myself as they where pretty expensive.

However, found out only later you can turn a female into a male for pollen.. and wondered if I could have just purchased feminized seeds, turn female into a male for pollen and produce seeds that way.

Warm regards from the Netherlands.

I've never actually bred, but as far as I know, that's the process for producing feminized seeds. Use colloidal silver (probably other methods I know nothing about) to treat a female plant. That inhibits flowering, which apparently confuses the plant enough to make her turn male. Any pollen produced from such a plant would be female pollen, and when used to pollinate regular females it'll yield feminized seeds. Pretty sure that's how it works.

Plant all 10. Let them grow together. All you really need is 1 female out of the 10 which I'm pretty positive you will find out of a 10 pack. Let the males have their way. You will have enough seed to make you sweat at the thought of hand counting them all.

After the female gets pollinated kill the males, and protect the women!

yes HK is correct best advice is to open pollenate with a male from the whole 10 pack or half the pack say 5 or 6 seeds

then start again after a good wipe down

If you’ve never grown, never bred you have the perfect seeds for you. The process of making feminized seeds isn’t as simple as putting 2 plants into a room and letting them breed.

Do you plan to take clones? i would recommend it. Here is my process (I’m currently making F5 seeds of strain not currently available):

Start all 10 seeds, grow them until they’re big enough to clone, take the clones and put the seedlings into flower, making sure to label the plants 1-10(this requires a 2nd light). Any males or females that seem dudded, get rid of. Once you know which are males pull them out (you could keep the best one now or just keep the clone of the best). After you harvest select 1 or many females you think are stellar to use for your breeding with your favorite male. Be sure to clone these so you can be ready for your 3rd grow.

While you’re making you seeds on your 2nd grow you’ll have smoke from the first harvest. Keep in mindseeds need to dry 2-3 months to get a good germination rate.

I see, I'll be growing on a small scale.. say 2x4 / 3x3.. so I was thinking about germinating 3 at a time.. get a clone of each as soon as possible, repot under 12/12 cycle to know in advance which one is male/female. I wondered if pollen from a small plant (the clone) is ok though, or if it's better to mature the male(s) and get pollen from those..e.g.

- If I get 3 males, I would collect pollen from the largest plant.. kill 2 smallest males, grow male and keep pollen for next grow
- If 2 males, 1 female.. keep pollen from largest clone, grow female & pollinate 1 or 2 lower buds
- If 1 male - 2 females.. keep pollen clone and grow females.. & pollinate 1 or 2 lower buds of largest female

The only thing is that I can't select the biggest male doing it like this. But that is ok, I wouldn't have the space to grow them all at once.

If you’re looking to just collect pollen and not do open room pollenating I have a couple suggestions. Note: You only need a male to flower for 3-4 weekIs to get pollen.

Is putting a plant outdoors after it shows sex an option? If not you could move it into another area with a couple cheap 65w cfl’s while it ripens.

Once it’s in full flower you can collect the pollen (plenty of info on this available). With your females in flower you can take a q-tip or paint brush and delicately paint the pollen on specific buds (again google these techniques). This will give you seeds and seedless buds on the same plants.

IME males often grow faster and stronger, you’ll find a male that you favorI’m sure. Do some research on the strain, find out what people say are desirable traits for the strain anduse that as a reference. Male / Female selection is important but in your scenario, where you just want t more seeds to play with in the future, it’s not as important than if you were trying to breed to create a new strain based on a checklist of characteristics.

or just stick with your plan of making seeds first, take a clone or two, if your good at cloning it wont matter the seeds are better to have stockpiled like you said they not cheap

No I'm not interested in breeding, I would just like to preserve the strain and create viable seeds with the same traits. Thanks for the info!

Yes I was surprised by the costs as you get thousands and thousands of seeds. But fair enough, I bought them as Sensi is the source for the original NL as far as I figured out so far, so decided to start with those genetics (I'll be using it to treat my ADD). Indeed a nice stockpile.. read seeds are viable for many years, so that made me decide to go this route. Thank you

There nl is a mix not pure of any one number i mean they used to sell the 5 x 2 now the nl sensi sell is a combination of nl1xnl2xnl5 made for them by breeder Steve years back if i remember right i wouldnt have paid the price for them but hopefully you find something good in em ive ran there hindu kush and found nice stuff so i wouldnt say everything from sensi is bad and yes stored correctly seeds last a fair amount of time ime

Ah really.. bummer.. bought them already.. so there is no way back. Thought the amount of money justified the carefully kept traits.. but I guess I paid 90% for the name. A well, lesson learn. Just received a reply from Sensi too that it can't be traced back to a specific number.. and I just mix each male with any female that happens to grow.. and just have a few seeds from each.. call it a day and be happy. Thanks for the info everybody, much appreciated

Start with regulars it's an easier way to begin. There's nothing wrong with breeding feminized seeds but regs don't require any intervention, simply don't pull the males. Plus it will show you have males should look. If you have the room I'd suggest running all 10 seeds on an open pollination table to preserve and expand the genetic pool you purchased.

Best of luck and look forward to seeing your seeds!
PS Seeded weed smokes just fine (after you clean the seeds, no difference in potency just a reduction in yield)

Is it? Still days of work to collect the seeds.. don't like that idea.. Yeah, I was thinking about feminized, but I'll have so many seeds just from pollinating a few buds, open pollination wil results in thousands of seeds and I won't grow them all in my lifetime (and won't vape it all either haha). So I think I'll go with the lottery and just be happy with whatever I end up with..

Probably depend more on me than the genetics I'd say, even if I strike gold I probably couldn't tell as a noob.

No need to pollinat the whole grow. Watch the males very closely after flip. When the very first pollen sacks start to open collect some pollen in a small jar or tiny bag. After pollen is collected destroy all the males. With a Q-tip spot pollinate only 1 or 2 buds on the female plants. This way you can have 20 or 30 seeds in a couple of buds but the majority of your weed will be seedless. You can save the pollen for several grows and even start making crosses with other cultivars in the future. Good luck!!

You could just collect the pollen and then pollinate a branch rather than a whole plant.
Very easy to do.
Bring the plant out of grow area.
Completely cover female plant with a big bin bag. Cut a small hole in bag and pull a branch through.
Dust the exposed single branch flowers with the pollen.
Mark the branch with a tag, a piece of string, tape etc.
Let it sit for an hour then spray down with a mister bottle to wash off excess pollen, take off bag and put back into grow area.
No need for thousands of seeds when 100 will suffice.

You still might find nice stuff in em i wouldnt despair yet price dont always indicate quality with cannabis it dont always correlate like folk think sensi used to be the best as they had nevils stock but due to busts or whatever not everythings the same also hollands harder to make seeds in these days mosts done in Spain also for reference you can still get fems of the 5x 2 nl from seedstockers and nl#1 s1s from vision seeds as for regs idk most breed with em and sell hybrids rather than sell those lines pure nirvana do a good reg nl as well theres is nl crossed to ghani then bxd to the nl again they dont say what number i reckon its the #5 however from growth and how its hybrids look
