I don't know anything about what happened to the site last week. However, the site owner said that there was a hardware problem, so if it was caused by a DDoS, then maybe some hardware had to be replaced. That may mean that some files had to be transferred, and for a site this large that can take a lot of time.
Has anyone heard of an overwhelmed server that required replacement? Even so, that would not explain the missing images, although I think the images are there, they are just not being displayed correctly.

I can see them.when I hit reply. They can be seen in the quote before actually hitting "post reply".

We've experienced that problem before when we had a system crash. It took some time, but it was eventually fixed.
