I have a 400w hps amp and ballast/bulb given to me by a friend. i have a pretty good general idea of how to go about this and have done research just im having a hard time understanding why my power surges out when i plug it in. i read its because my sockets cant handle the amps or whatever but i cant seem to find a solution. anyone know of a way to get past this?

find a circuit with nothing else running on it.- no micrwave-washer-tv-heater,ect.... then use this for your light. If it still surges and trips a breaker, im going to have to say theres a problem with the ballast.
Most ballasts have either a 110 or 220 sockets. make sure your using the right one.

If you have your own circuit breaker box in your apartment turn on all your lights and maybe plug a few things into outlets in different rooms and then one at a time turn off a breaker and see what loses power. If you can do that see if you can use the circuit that has the least amount of things on it that and if possible things that are not used often and do not draw as much electricity as other things.
