question on curing burp style

i read everywhere to something like burp 4 times the first day, 2 or 3 the next 2 or 3 days, then once a week or something to that effect.

it seems the whole idea is to slowly dry the buds to 62% or 55% or whatever target rh in between.

its all about burping on a schedule, but it seems to me you should take both the jar and the ambient rh into consideration.

so if it is 62% in the jar and 63% in the house, and my target is 60%, its stupid to burp, right?

i dried for 6 days on drying racks in a room with a ceiling fan on high and rh of 66% at 75 deg for 5 days then 55-60% rh the last. jarred when it was 60% ambient, 18 qt jars with hygrometers in 4, and all they have done is oscillate between 60 and 62% for 24 hours. so if it doesnt go up, do i still just let it sit and cure for ~4 weeks?

or maybe the moisture is so deep so after the relatively fast dry time of 6 days it will take 3 or 4 days for the moisture to get to the surface?

Just stick a meter in it and leave it in view out of the sunlight with a paper towel over the jar. Watch it it every day and when it gets within 10% of you goal, then put the lid on for overnight . See what it is in the morning and repeat as necessary

I prefer to open the jar and even take all the nugs out, place them on a paper towel spread out if possible and leave them out for a few hours a day, put them back in the jar and repeat daily....for me it cured my buds perfectly, they tasted incredibly smooth, no harshness at all and tons of flavor.

it IS at the target rh! thats my question - i am assuming it will go up as deeper moisture makes its way out.....its obviously there because the 2nd and 3rd bigger stems still bend (1st stem holding the buds snap)

I my self do it like everyone around here more or less, burping it at the beginning every day, then when there is only the smell that is supposed to be and it feels dry and "crysp" I just don't burp in all unless I open it to to fill my "portable" stash, but I'm not very picky, or at least not paranoic picky about anything. And I want to share about an old man that died like 15 years ago, he always store his cannabis inside some... something like this, idk english name for it:

esparto.JPG

and it was in a haystack, always with a nice pile of hay on top, I did smoke from there cannabis with more that 10 years and it was... AWESOME, the smells was something I'm not gonna forget. I need to add that it was in Spain, the haystack was in a second floor with a nice temp/rh all year along, but I just want to tell you that many times with the happyness that our plants give to us, we tend to overdo everything.

peace

Obviously, you're going to need to get your house RH below your target for the jar, even if only slightly. Some people/places have climate controlled rooms to store their bud, where it's 60% rh 24/7 and everything just hangs in there. Your bud should dry nice and slow if your RH is 63% and especially if your temps are below 70-somewhere between 7-12 days, so when you get close, just fill a jar halfway with buds and stick a hygrometer in there and check it 30 min later. If the humidity is way off, put the buds in a paper bag overnight. When you think your main crop is close, jar test a fresh set of buds. You should only need to do this for a couple of days before you hit your target, unless you didn't let them dry nearly enough to begin with. Once they stay around 60% rh for a few hours inside of the jar, trim and jar up everything. You might only need to burp once per day or even every couple of days. Be sure to jiggle the buds around when you open them up so they all get fresh air. You won't need to burp super often unless you get the timing way off and jar them up too early.

Just curious opinions, after dry, when heading in jar, better to use the hygrometer or what about those Boveda 62 packs? I only ask as I’ve got a hygrometer for the dry room. But before I got out and buy smaller ones for jars, there’s the option to buy humidity packs instead? Anyone ever use them?

Neither. I mean unless you're entering your buds into a competition, who cares. Smokable is smokable. Just treat em right and they'll treat you right. For super long term storage i would probably vacuum seal some, or yeah maybe use Bovedas. But i barely make it to the next harvest with leftovers, so i just "give away" the older stuff.

I use the smaller ones, I really like em. I put one in each jar for the duration of the cure. I know that with experience this shouldn’t really be necessary, but I’m a guy that will take all the data I can get. It’s also kind of interesting how there can be variations of around 5% RH between jars of the same harvest.

Varying bud density and stem core thickness per bud. It's why i do my best to randomly mix my jars bud-size wise, & not just put all the tops in one jar.

Thanks! Do you have a specific mini hygrometer you use for jars. I’ve seen some on Amazon. But reviews aren’t great. You got something tried, and tested?

Nope I use the basic Amazon- purchased ones. The drawback is that they have those watch batteries, so at some point they’ll run out and I’ll probably just buy new sensors lol they’re pretty cheap

I've never heard of this, but that would be a sweet setup. Just walk in and pluck a bud.

Ordered a pack of 5 mini for $20. If I mix bud sizes I’m sure they can be used in ever other jar. Thanks.
