Question about Random seeds

Hello all,

I'm on my first grow and I'm trying to learn as much as I can to be successful. I am currently growing 4 auto NL's under a 400W MH/HPS interchangable ballast. Previously the plants were under a 1000W MH (one of my beginner purchase mistakes). I moved the 400W closer to the plants as I read from the distance chart that almost as many lumens can be put into the plant that way with a less powerful light. The plants are growing but I feel they are somewhat small for their age (almost 4 weeks). I did repot them and afterwards read that this was a bad call for autos. Still I am very proud of what I have accomplished with what I have so far. Although mistakes tend to cost money, I am thankful for them because of the learning experience.

Anyway, I do have a few newbie questions for anyone willing to answer-

1) I recently found some seeds in a random bag of bud (not too high quality). I was wondering if it is possible to grow these (assuming they germinate) and get high quality bud off of them, simply by growing it better than the original grower? I realize seeds are very much based on genetics, but maybe this weed was good originally at one point and then just got old by the time I got a hold of it?

2) I have been strictly using the MH bulb on my MH/HPS ballast. I have read it is best to have a 2:1 light spectrum ratio depending on the stage of the plant. Would it be beneficial to switch in the HPS bulb once every 2 days, and have the MH in the rest of the time? Or should I just be using straight HPS for these autos?

3) I realize there's a calculator for this sort of thing, but I was just wondering how much people's electric bills went up with a 400W light.

That's all I can think of for now. Thanks for reading and for potential answers.

Yes, but remember to remove any males. Plant potency can depend of many things, harvest period (plant maturity), grow method and plant genetics.

I have never grown an auto, but I use an MH for vegging and an HPS for flowering both 600w. I have vegged with the HPS and have had great results.

With a 600w, I haven't been paying that much more in electricty, as appose to when I'm not growing. A lot of appliance in the house run at the same wattage, if not more than grow lights, so by simply switching off unused appliance, can keep the bill steady/low.

Ya bro I would stay with the MH for vegging for sure. I veg with 2 400W 1 MH 1 HPS, now I am flowering with both HPS....peace bongsmilie

Oh about the seads, they should germinate but you will, say out of 10 planted, get 4 males and 3 hermies,(my guess) if ya catch the hermied ones still leaves ya with 3 girls treat em right and they will still get ya high

How do I know when an auto is "done" vegging? pre-flowers? I'm a little confused with how long the veg stage of an auto actually is. I read they only live for 9-11 weeks. So I'm guessing half of that life is the veg stage, and the other half is the flowering. They're almost at 4 weeks which is half. If I'm correct in my logic, I should switch to HPS at around week 5? I am fairly certain that at least 2/4 of them are female. Unless it's not possible to detect sex this early, then feel free to laugh at my newbishness...

Also, I've been doing light cycles of initially 24 hours for a few days (the room was very cold and I needed the heat from the light), and now 20/4 (took care of the heat issue). Should I switch to 18/4 or is the most light possible best for autos because they will flower regardless?\

Thank you very much for the replies and advice.

I grow bag-seed with great success. one in avatar is one ;)

auto's should flower with any light schedule.

hps is best for flowering as a Mh is more in the Blue color spectrum.

What has been said is, in general, accurate, but there is more to it than simply metal halide versus high pressure sodium. You have to factor in the color temperature. There is a big difference how plants in flower will grow under a 6500K or 6700K or 7000K metal halide bulb than they will if under a 2000K or 3600K or 3700K or 3800K or 4000K metal halide bulb .. and the same can be said for high pressure sodium bulbs, though they do not range as much in Kelvin ratings as metal halide bulbs.
