Question about cfl's

My plants seem to be doing well under all 2700k bulbs...aside from being overwatered. It comes down to cost effectiveness for me. Six 26w 2700k bulbs for $10 or two 26w 6500k bulbs for $10. If an hps can veg in 2700k, I don't see why the rules change for cfls. It's just not optimum, but no artificial light is when you get right down to it.

Lowes has a killer deal on them right now. $.99 or $1.99 or something like that for four. Otherwise, WalMart has Great Value three packs for about $4-5.

Actually hps are more than optimal hence the huge hydroponic fruit and veg industries in countries that have excellent weather...

2700k cfl will seem fine, but without knowing the difference you will never really be able to comment from a knowledge based position.

It is like saying 'my car runs really well in second gear' then someone shows you how much better it runs in 3rd 4th and 5th!

Compared to natural sunlight, no lighting is optimal. I'm not arguing which spectrum is better for growing, since professionals have obviously proven that 6500k works better for veg but 2700k works just fine for the plant's life. 2700k is 2700k and comparing spectral energy distribution charts it appears that a 2700k cfl has as much, if not more, blue than a standard hps bulb. What I'm saying is that the extra cost for 6500k bulbs isn't worth it to me. When I've done things correctly my plants have grown .5-1" a day. That's plenty fast for me. This seems like one of those forum pardigms that grumpy old man is always complaing about.

By the way, RPM would've made a better analogy since gearing doesn't change how an engine runs. 6500rpm in idle is the same as 6500rpm in any gear. Gearing just changes the torque conversion from the flywheel to the wheels.

My analogy was based on speed, obviously, 2700k bulb=2nd gear 6500k=4th/5th gear.
0.5 to 1'' per day isnt very much.
bulbs cost the same in the UK hence my post. Yet again, dont know why I bother....:wall:

Maybe you wouldn't be banging your head against a wall if you weren't looking for an argument? Take a bong hit and chill out, dude.

I said my plants were growing fine, not great. I also agreed with you that plants have been proven to veg better under 6500k. I didn't say not to get 6500k at all. I said they weren't mandatory. I also didn't say my growth was spectacular, I just said it was good enough for me on my first grow. Maybe you don't understand what "to me" means? It means that it's a personal choice that I made for myself, not for anyone else.

This forum is a lot more hostile than I expected.
