Pruning and Trimming for Flowering

I just started flowering my NL at about 44 days of veg. I'm wondering if I should trim a little bit near the bottom of the plant. I've seen some extreme example at the local dispensary in which they cut most of all the branches and leaves that were extra (lollypopping I believe someone called it). I'm thinking I will just cut a few leaves and maybe small branches at the very base, as I've heard this will help reduce the possibility of bugs and mold. Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm including a pic of my plant from about a week ago... (gotta upload some new ones soon)

Personally with a plant like that i would really not take too much off.

Just clean around 1/4 maybe a bit less from the bottom.

In my opinion.

leaves are the solar panels of the plant, the place which they absord all their energy, very small amounts of pruning can help shape the plant for optimum light penetration in veg , equally for tall plants that don't have strong lights, pruning the bottom branches that light does not get to can help growth concentrate in the canopy. But i really don't think you should prune any of that plant, it will only decrease production . Moreover I've never heard of pruning as a way of deterring bugs and mold and i really can't see any logic in that.

noted, and thanks for the opinions and infos... I just remember someone commenting on the fact that the closer the leaves are to the soil the easier it is for bugs to get on or leaves to sit in wet soil, hence the mold possibility. I don't know how much I buy into that belief though...

I guess I will just leaf her as she is... har har... sorry bad joke

Although I hate cutting ANY leaves at all because they are beneficial to the plant, depending on the strain and size, I will sometimes cut the lower branches for the exact reasons you stated.

I've had mold and gnat problems in the past, pretty bad at times. Cutting the lower branches has definitely helped eliminate those problems. The base of your plant is very stuffy and full of leaves, a place where mold and bugs thrive. By cutting those branches, you allow for more air circulation, which will deter those pests. And like it was said earlier, cutting the lower leaves and branches will allow for more growth concentration in the canopy. In my experience, those lower branches typically produce tiny "popcorn" nugs that are a pain in the ass to manicure and aren't really worth it. The buds don't usally get enough light to grow big because the canopy is intercepting most of the light.

However, these mold and bug problems usually only occur when you have a group of plants in a confined area. In your case, your only growing one plant. Therefore, I probably wouldn't cut the lower branches because they are getting suficient light because it doesn't have to compete with other plants.

By the way, what kind of light are you using and how far from the plants? The plant looks a little strecthy...if you can get the light closer to the plant without burning it, I would definitely do that.

If you have a really dense bushy plant it can help to trim some lower branches. I have had to trim them up cause I couldn't inspect for bugs and webs.

I started by using CFLs, which might account for some of the stretch... the light is now a 400w HPS which is around 16" from the top of the plant. Since I'm anticipating alot more growth, I'm gonna keep the light where it is... oh also I took some clones from right below where she's topped... I'm sure she'd be a bit fuller with the extras. Thanks for the comments... good to get some clarification on the topic (+rep). I might just trim a few leaves down there, but leave all the main branches and big fans intact....

I would say if you have no bug probs now wait till week 2 in flower to trim , the bottom small branches as they wont produce anything it wastes you plants energy on small buds.

one thing i am wondering is if it is normal for a plant about 45 days into flowering to have its bigger sun leaves begin to turn yellow and fall off?

not all of them or even a lot, it is more like a seldom one here and there, my main question would have to be weither i should allow these leaves to keep growing till they just fall off or if i should trim them off when they get like 60-75 percent yellow?

No cool tube, but I have a good fan in there and another fan blowing air into the closet. Temps usually stay around upper 70s while the light is on. I think that should be sufficient for now... although I am planning on making a diy duct with pc fan... I got these 24v ones, now I just gotta find the right ac adaptor. Hopefully that will work and possibly even be a air filter system.

what i do is cut the main fan leaves off! to give the the lower branches light, and that only means ... MORE BUD... the main fan leaves will cover up light and all the light will be concentrated towards the main cola .. and u gonna get popcorn buds on the other branches... NOT GOOD!

Needing more help, we found some seeds in our purchase and decided to germinate them, we are growing Fem bluse cheese at the moment, and want to know how would we tell if the new seeds that we germinated is male and can we put them in the same grow tent together with the Femi seeds.
