who doesn't carry insurance can end up with thousands of dollars in out of pocket costs for a treatment of typical serious medical condition such as a stroke or heart attack.
I found the bill from when I had the heart attack 6 years back, while spring cleaning...
Gave me a lump in the throat to see how much it was. SO grateful I had medical coverage.

Medicare is not bad, it's just not where I hope this country settles upon long term. Medicare for All would be progress. I'd support it. But I'd rather we have a debate where all options are discussed including 100% taxpayer funded medical care. Also socialize the medical care system along the same lines as Britain, Canada, Denmark, Sweden and Australia.

You are South African? How do you like the system there?

Used to be great, now the government wants to interfere and force the private hospitals to take care of the poor....
So, like in communist Russia, you will be able to pick a number behind the row of people who stabbed each other after drinking too much.

So basically if you are poor, things look better, if you are near the middle thing are worse, and if you are near the top, you go overseas...

yeah, well,

maybe the system should expand along with taking on additional people?

No, people are paying taxes for hospitals you don't want to set foot in.
the very same hospitals I used to frequent as a child are now government pity parties.
Then we have to pay medical aids so they can pay the private hospitals when we need medical service.
