Problem or not?

Hey,

I have a meanwell hlg 120 700c b version

It was wired up to 4x cxb2530s

I am now running only 2x cxb2530 on the driver


To my understanding the cobs are punching out between 33-35v running at 700m.a

That is 66-70v

My driver takes 107-215v


Im confused ? i didnt think i was able to power the 2x cxb2530's because theire voltage is under the drivers voltage? (107-215)

Am i looking at it the wrong way? Do the voltage numbers on the driver just mean it will be most efficient between 107-215v?

Probably a simple answer but im stuck,

Will it cause my driver to get hotter then normal or anything else ?

Well that's interesting. I too was under the impression that the minimum voltage needed to be met before anything would light up.

Curious though. Are the other two Cree 2530's still attached? It's possible they may be still drawing current without firing? Or acting like a load maybe?

I'm not too sure. I've only built the one light.

I started with 4 x cobs but the first 2 in the string didnt work so i took them off & fired up the 2 that did work in hope that they alone would work, and they did..

What i read in one of supras posts is that you shouldnt start a driver without a string attatched.. i did the opposite.. i started the driver and then joined the wires to see if the cobs would work.. there was a tiny spark when the wires touched..the first 2 cobs on the string didnt light up but the other 2 did.. so now ive taken away the 2 that didnt work and left the 2 that did - & there still going

How have you got them wired up. Series or parrallel?

in my experience the "minimum voltage" spec on constant current meanwells is usually higher than what will realistically light up cobs

that said, ~66V is considerably less than 107V

that doesnt mean theyre not operating in some funky mode that may no be ideal for your drivers and cobs

the drivers have all sorts of protections i dont think you need to worry about fire or anything

that said the amount you can grow in 2 weeks prob exceeds the cost of the driver and chips so if its lighting up, grow on.....

Thanks for your input CobKits, i check the temp of the driver and its always around 40-42c so im not worried yet.

But now i am thinking i want to check the cobs to see how much of the 0.700ma they are receiving with the dimmer turned all the way up - my temps are crazy low 17-20c - which seams odd to me
