Pot Size Matters

Must be a lot easier, I'm sure that the tall plant I commented on had to be so rootbound and stressed. I thought stress often contributed to Herm.
stress does just depends on the stress and situation but....you also have to give props to the grower...especially for the size of the pot, secondly for the beauty of the plant in question. Every plant is different, every grow style is different, every pot is different....overall..in reality you are just a garden caretaker in the end and I would hope loving every minute of it.

It's why we do it I hope. I just like trying to avoid conditions that might cause the plants stress if I can help it. Plant I'm growing currently is blasting off hard in a 5 gallon pot, just tonight I set the timer to begin 12/12 so it will show me it's sex.. first mistake is I should have done it long before it's the size it is now. Praying for a lady!

So I just harvested 5oz, dry weight. All clones, same strain, 5 plants in 1 gallon smart pots. Previous harvest was about 11oz, same strain, but 2 plants this time grown in 5 gallon pots. I only did the 1 gallon pot grow to prove to my father in law that pot size matters when it comes to yield, he swears it didn’t. Needless to say, he’s now a believer, what do you guys think.....
A general rule of thumb is 1 gallon per month of grow, so a 3 gallon pot for an average 3 month grow is perfect.
1 gallon is too small & a 5 gallon is not needed for an indoor grow.

I suppose I did take your post out of context. There are different type of "Old School Growers". Some will never change their ways and will continue to do and believe what they always have. Then there are others that basically stay with what they've been doing but still experiment with new things and use them if they notice a change for the better. Your father in law is the former but some like me are the latter. Root mass does play a big part in plant size so yes pot size does matter. Just because some can grow a plant to a huge size in a small pot doesn't negate pot size and root mass for bigger plants. And no it didn't hermie. It flowered for 20 weeks and was still kicking out new pistils when I chopped it.

I'm constantly learning. I research all the new stuff. Most I just toss aside as unneeded and hyped up because that's what it is. Cannabis isn't the latest laptop that just keeps getting more powerful as new technology is developed. You are never going to get exponential growth or yields like you do with something technology based. Cannabis is a plant. Moore's law does not apply. There are only so many new tricks out there for growing cannabis.

The most significant new things out there for growing cannabis is going to be LED lighting. Some neat stuff out there and it's still has a lot of room to improve. The new trick nutrients are no better than nutrients that have been used for years. In fact they're the same stuff just packaged different and marketed with shiny bottles and cool sounding names to draw in those that don't understand plant nutrition.

If you've ever read my posts you'd see that I usually have done my research and while doing that research I learn. I'm also an IT guy and am constantly learning to stay up to date. So no close mindedness here. It's just that the old dog new tricks goes both ways. Sometimes the old tricks are better than the new ones but the young timers are only interested in the latest new shiny thing even though it's no better. It's all marketing. There is an entire new generation of cannabis growers that have never grown another plant and think they need all the products in magazines like High Times or Maximum yield. There is so much overpriced crap being sold to grow cannabis it's ridiculous.

Good soil, the sun, water. That's all that's needed to grow cannabis. It may be old school but it works. So many new growers make things so complicated that it's no surprise so many have so many problems growing such an easy plant. $600 for a 6 site DWC system that is just some buckets, hose, and pumps. $700 for 500 watts of LED lighting. $20 a liter for a dozen different bottles of nutrients and additives. And half have crappy grows despite all these new tricks. I'm going to keep growing the same way I have for years. If new things come along I use them if they are worthwhile. If not I'm not going to waste my time.

I can tell your intelligent and respectful and I appreciate that. Some of us old farts get crotchety at times. Aches and pains all over, etc... :bigjoint: But I'm always still ready to hit the water behind a boat and get the crap beat out of me wakeboarding. I guess I'm not really that old. Yet

Good luck with your grow. :peace:bongsmilie
I have absolutely no argument with anything you said, I actually agree 100% of it. I only started growing because of my old school farther in law who use to cultivate 100’s of plants a time, so he was the perfect person to learn from, and where I gained most of what I know. We have our disagreements here and there, but nothing we can’t come to an agreement on. The only thing I didn’t agree with was the pot size. So what better way to prove what he was saying than to do it, and I did. The proof was in the pudding, the pot size did matter. I used the same lights, same nutes, same soil, same everything. Both vegged for the same time and flowered for the same time. Only difference was pot size, and based on the experiment, the bigger pots yielded more. He was receptive of the experiment and was grateful that I was willing to basically waste my time to see for myself. Well I’m not sure I wasted my time, still got 5oz out of it, but I now know that I won’t take everything I hear for face value, but I won’t discredit the idea either without doing like you do, and research and experiment. I have nothing but love and respect for the old school, that’s why I am where I am now.

And you are right, at the end of the day, it’s just a plant, it’s not like there’s some new water or another sun sitting somewhere else to use. A plant is gonna do what a plant does, and that’s grow, and they don’t exactly need our help to do it. It’s all this nutrient feeding and supplementing that takes them out of their natural way of growing, hence the issues a lot of growers are running into. That of course doesn’t mean the nutrient and supplementation doesn’t work, it’s just not necessary to have a decent crop. I got away from bottle feeding and strictly grow organically now. I do however use amendments but that’s it. I hope what I said didn’t offend you, and maybe I myself took you being closed minded a little of context myself, and for that I apologize, wasn’t my intention. I was just trying to shed some light on why I felt pot size matters, not black lives matter, hahaha, just kidding. I’m African American myself. Thought that would break the ice.

Oh I’m a firm believer in pot size matters, I think my 5 gallon pot grow compared to my 1 gallon was pretty evident. Just hard to convince the old school that the new school can do it just as good, or better.
Over here we have a group of folks who all grow and swap ozs at the end of the season.

I'm the young one in the group. To put that in perspective I am 42.

I had to inform 3 of my elders they had nitrogen deficits. To allow me to correct that. I had to convince them lol.

Took a week before one of them would let me fix there shit.

Now he calls me anytime a leaf looks at him funny.

Old dogs can learn new tricks. If you bop them on the nose with the truth enough. Lol
