Berkeleys police chief is defending using 10 officers some on overtime to search for his teenage sons stolen iPhone. Chief Michael Meehan told the Oakland Tribune Wednesday there was no preferential treatment when the officers, including three detectives and a sergeant, went searching for his sons phone apparently stolen from a school locker in January.
Meehan says field supervisors decide how many officers to put on a case and hes confident that the search for the phone that had a tracking device and took officers into neighboring Oakland was properly handled.
Meehan was scrutinized in March for ordering a sergeant to a reporters home to ask for changes to an online story about a community meeting criticizing the alleged slow police response to an elderly mans beating death.
