Ive used 3mm hard board for a door, rigged up to slide open and close.Overlap about 5" there was no light leaks.A little wax to help the door slide.3mm for the sides youll have to frame it with something thicker so you can screw it together.Any and all will work its how you built it that counts.Good luck.

Hi

I’m pretty good with the diy but often I learn of products you trades ppl use that are amazing for grow room builds so I wanted to ask the experts and friendly peeps here.

I’m currently designing and building a new cabinet for growing it will measure 2x6 ft total(6ft tall), with 2x2 of it for veg:clones/ fan/ ect

I’ve just moved to a new house and so am Trying to plan well before I buy and cut the stuff

Ok so my question is about wood
It will be a simple framed area
After I build the frame I will be attaching boards and doors to it

I have the choice to use mdf or particle board and paint (budget restraints) or I could use malamine that is already white.

I’m kinda stuck wich way to go

If I use mdf and particle board I’ll need to paint so what type of paint will waterproof this stuff? Can I use a flat white primer sealer type paint? Is it gonna stop the boards getting mouldy? What am I particularly looking for in a paint?
Can I use the same paint for the floor?

I’m in Australia so brands are limited hence I’m asking about what properties to look for in the paint when I buy it

Or is the malamine a better idea?

Thanks
Henry white roof paint.

Well I’ve had a few set backs but we growers and pretty creative so I’ve got a new plan now

Ill
Keep posting here as I figure it out exactly

Pretty much the mrs saw my blueprint and cracked the shits that I was going to use up almost all of the laundry room

So I’ve been banished to the back of the room and decided to use my old wardrobe that I had a tent in(it’s the 50x80x180 one linked earlier) @Mitchician but I’m going to remodel it and take after @zypheruk and do two shelves just shy of 90cm tall each.

I’ll have the bottom shelf(50x80x85) for flower and the top shelf (50x80x90) split up for like this:

50x50 flower
And the other 50x30 part with 3 shelves
2 for veg/clones and my fan filter combo up top

I’ll be running perpetual sog no mum, clone off clone to flower ect

I’ll have to put in walls for airflow (checked out that 3mm malamine mdf at Bunnings and it’s solid) and will have a sliding door for the veg area thanks @myke will use aluminium and wax will work a treat

It’s gonna be tight and a bit of work but I feel it’s better to keep a small footprint and make it easy to move (we rent)

Ordering in some more strips and a driver for veg

Excited af

Will finish planning and throwing around ideas here and maybe do a step by step build thred if I can be arsed with pics

I’ve been growing for about 10 years but always too paranoid to post pics however I’d love to do a journal, is it safe ?

I know I promised to put some sketch up models in here so I will do that as soon as I’m on my laptop

It’s in a nook in the wall and I could extend my wardrobe to fill the whole space but it’s gonna be tricky and spendy...but you could twist my arm.

I could get another 10cm depth and another 30cm hight on the while cab..
Should i bother to fill out the space?
Maybe just add the hight?
Cheers

I have a small cab I custom built and shoehorned into the only available spot in my home( my flower side is on top of the veg cab, i wanted more height for flower, and i figured the taller cab would work better on top) you can never go wrong with more space. Id recommend it.
Yeah man, start a thread on your grow (no more journals on riu) if you're comfortable enough. Im in a legal state so thats easy for me to say lol
Heres a pic of my cab(not moveable) Its roughly 4ft wide, 4 ft high and less than 24" deep, but its more than enough to supply me with enough flower. I end up giving away a lot to my good friend and my bro. Keep us updated

Im all for building things, dad was a carpenter for 50 years so i picked it up from him, but for a 2x2x6 i would honestly just go with a tent? is there a reason you dont want to go with a tent? 2x2 tents only cost like 40$

i mean its a tent in a basement.. whos gonna see it? even if someone does all you say is its a pop up wardrobe to keep some extra clothes you have from getting dusty/mildew.. and if you really felt the need you could build a quicky-wall to cover it, save you the trouble of painting, sealing, etc. but i understand the desire to build so if its what your set on go for it, just seems like this is one project thats gonna cost you more than it needs to for a less than ideal result. -my .02$

Not in a basement
In the laundry room of a rental apartment in a country where it’s very illegal
Mdf quiets Fan noises better than tent
Wardrobe is lockable so kids don’t poke around and if realestate agent gets nosy needs a warrant

Also my dimensions have changed now please see the post above

Have u any experience at all or just what u have seen on YouTube?

You had a tent inside your wardrobe?

Anyway I think you've got too much bloom for your amount of veg, your veg areas are too short, and it all sounds like a shitload more work than it needs to be with all the different chambers.. as in you really only need 2 chambers + somewhere for your fan and filter, to do a perpetual s.o.g..

You can do all the 18/6 stuff in one area and not pigeonhole yourself by putting so many walls up everywhere, just use risers to bring small plants up to the light, and/or have multiple lights hung independently to each other so one side can have tall plants and the other side has younger/shorter ones with everything in between.

I think your biggest decision would be what height to put the shelf to get the volume of veg:bloom ratio right.
About 2:1 bloom:veg would be ideal I reckon. Maybe 3:1 in favour of bloom if you plan on growing hazes or any stretchy stuff, but 600 high is getting really tight even for veg..

Extending dimensions sounds like a big waste of time to me, but you could use that space without actually growing in it..
I think you should run ducting at the back to join the veg and bloom areas and have your fan inside an insulated box sitting on top of the cupboard pulling air through the bloom chamber, then the veg chamber above it, then out through your filter hanging in a top corner of the veg chamber, through the fan, and getting pushed out a long piece of ducting hanging down the back. The long piece on the exhaust side of the fan will help muffle sound a bit more. This does require an airtight seal between the bloom and veg and the doors need to be pretty sealed too, or too much air will just bypass the bloom section through any gaps in the veg section or the ducting joining the 2 spaces. A better but more expensive option would be to have a fan dedicated to each space, that way, any air leaks through door gaps and such won't matter and you'll still have full CO2 ppm in the veg section at all times, not that it would really need it.

I can't comment on how safe it is to upload pics and you should really make that decision on your own so as not to put any onus on others should anything go bad. If you have a family to provide for I would advise against it if it would put them in financial strife should you get into trouble.

Of course this is all just my opinion and to be fair you've been growing twice as long as me so don't let us rain on your parade mate for all we know you could be onto something really good here.. Sorry if I just threw a bunch of doubt in your mind but you do sound like a pretty confident guy..

Very nice build, hiding in plain sight.. Did the doors need 2 handles each or would 1 have done the job? A bit of candle wax or graphite dust in the track would have removed the need for the top ones, no?

Yeah mate fully appreciate ur input

I was growing in a tent in the garage and my 15 ye old commented on dads crack factory(he obviously knew it was suss but didn’t peek inside)
So the mrs threatened to chuck it out so I put the wardrobe around it and locked it up

I agree with you 100% about makin it more work
Def will just use the depth for ducting I have plenty of computer fans and will use that to vent veg into flower before it hits the scrubber

Because of moving to the back of the room I’ll mdf off the window and plug the ventilation directly to outside I have the 6 inch ac infinity that I will do a box for and the carbon filter as well

Main reason for shelving the veg is so I have enough clones to put in flower
Reason for two selves is so I have enough flower space

I wish that 50x80 would be enough flower space for me but I smoke a lot and the mrs smokes more than me

She is breastfeeding so I have about another 6 months to dial this in or I won’t be able to afford rent (sounds stupid but it is what it is)

I need at least 1 oz a week for both of us

Is ur whole cab 4ft or the flower area is 4ft?
The whole cab is 4'+ in lenght by 8' tall, so the flower cab is 4' L x 4' H x 2' deep or wide. The veg side(or bottom) is roughy the same but my height is less than the flower cab. My thought was to keep them compact in the veg side cuz I knew I wasnt going to have much headroom in flower( I'm always running out of height in flower. Its something I'm trying to improve on, putting them in flower a little smaller)Gotta love cobs and their relatively low heat output, my plants tend to get quite close to my lights

Very nice build, hiding in plain sight.. Did the doors need 2 handles each or would 1 have done the job? A bit of candle wax or graphite dust in the track would have removed the need for the top ones, no?
Thank you, I wanted it to be functional and look nice.Absolutely no need for the dual handles. I thought I would need them but did not. A carpenter friend had these plastic tracks, for sheetrock he said (which I've never seen before) they were perfect width for my 3/8 inch plywood to slide on. I have them on all doors, top and bottom, so 4 pieces altogether. I can take a pic when I get home. There is zero drag or resistance when I open and close my doors. Those plastic tracks were almost too good to be true. I was worried about drag., and I did have wax in mind before the tracks were sourced. The other thing that really worked out for me were the brushes you can see to block any light that may try and creep in. I made those doors pretty tight, but I always shoot for overkill. Those are garage door weather strips, a bit pricey but well worth it. Ive gotten into my flower cab with the doors shut and the lights on out in my room and there is no light coming through. Damn light sensory deprivation lol.

Edit
You can see the plastic tracks on both the flower and veg cabs on the bottom side of the doors
