Lights at full power raised higher will give better penetration in to the canopy. You'll have to deal with higher temps from the fixtures and higher energy cost. Also, running at higher power will lower the time to failure of the fixture.

Lights at lower power and closer to canopy will not penetrate as well. Temps will be lower. Energy cost lower. Lifespan of fixture will be longer.
Thanks @Tracker. I think I will keep them on high then. I am looking for the best results. Sounds to me like fixtures on high will give better results.

If you just want the best light penetration into the canopy.....

From a point source, the power density of the emitted light decays as 1/(d^2). If the distance from the source to the canopy is "d", then at twice that distance "2d" you have 1/4 of the power density.

Assuming that the power density would be the same at the surface of the canopy in either configuration....

If in the low power configuration the source is 12" above the canopy, then at 12" below the canopy the power density will be 1/4.

If in high power configuration the source is 24" above the canopy, then at 24" below the canopy the power density will be 1/4.

Thanks brother. I can wrap my head around that.never heard it explained that way. Appreciate your help. It is much appreciated.

How's everybody dealing with this heat? I know we just got a 2 day break (low 90's), but this triple digit shit is nuts. I've had water running 24/7 for about 8 days/nights now just to keep the lawn green. I got a Big Detroit Energy strain that seems to love it tho!.. green from head to toe, and flowering nicely.. White Widow is on the struggle bus, and of course, the indoor is doing fine. Im sure ready for Fall. 103-109 expected here for the unforeseeable future.

This heat is crazy. In my grow room I am struggling to keep the temps in check with lights on. Seems my window unit is not enough. Thinking I will have to buy a mini split for next summer. Happy to hear your outdoor is doing great. I know without asking how your indoor is going.

Yeah, it is crazy.... that smaller room I built for the 4x8 tent is great. It's like it makes it's own little environment. All I have to do is keep the humidity in check during flower. I don't even go out there but every 3 days or so to fill up the gravity feed tank. I didn't do much training.. no lollipopping or larfing.. I just let the shit go. Im just taking the top colas anyways.

My grow room is actually the garage that I converted to a room when we bought the house 8 years ago. I have ac ran out there but it is on the east end of house and gets sunlight all day and with door closed to keep humidity in check on the really hot days it has reached mid 90s. I am hoping I do not get heat stress issues.

Hose those coils down and try to shade it. It might help a little.

Yeah I haven't cleaned coils in the 3 years I have had unit in there. I did not think that the lights would put off that much heat. Hell I only ran one plant this summer so I only had to run one light. I am running my roi-e420 instead of the roi-e720. Man I really appreciate you turning me on to these GROWER'S CHOICE lights. I am loving them. Best investment I have made.

Hasn't been as bad as last summer. We had a month straight over 100 every day with a week over 110. Hottest temp I recorded on the backyard temp sensor was 116 last year. I haven't seen over 110 yet this year. The garden seems to be doing alright....

Yessir!.. the dual ROI 420's in the 4x8 are plenty!

I have a question for you guys. This looks like light burn to me what do you guys think? Par on my roi420 is at 971 and this is the only area affected. I have enclosed pic of what rest of buds look like. I am in middle of week 6 since flip. Any help will be appreciated.
