Non inline fan noise reduction?

hey everyone.. i'm currently in process of my first semi stealth grow using fluorescent tubes. i have two 48" lights using gro lux bulbs and just bought a semi cheap but well working fan at a department store. i was wondering if there's anyway to reduce noise possibly by insulating the fan in a box somehow.. like maybe use a styrofoam packing box and cut smaller holes in it? the room doesn't get crazy hot but i figured i should keep the temp down.. any ideas?

also sorry if there's a thread on this i tried searching but everything i found came up with inline fans and this is not what i have it's a 4" all steel fan sitting on rubber gromets.

Depends on the fan but most times hanging the fan from the ceiling will reduce a lot of the noise causing vibrations.
Is it an inline fan or is the motor on the outside? If the motor is the loud part and if its outside of the blades then you could try wrapping a twoel around the casing or something if it wouldn't get too hot.
If hanging it isn't an option you can try setting it on a vibration dampening material (towels / soft foam or rubber mat)

the vibration isn't the problem you can just hear the air flow so i figured maybe an insulated box with smaller holes or something might help muffle it?

i'm also working on getting a thermometer so i'm not even sure if the room gets too hot with two FL tube lights....

your (noise) insulated box idea might work, you could get dryer hose for the intake / exhaust holes and insulate those too if noise comes from them. make them long enough to dissipate some of the noise.
then you would have the hose to easily attach a filter later on if you chose to.
and walmart has a good thermometer / humidity meter for like $6-7 and it will tell you the max/min humidity and temp also.

i actually just tore up some carpet and padding that i think might help if i put it in there...ill try it out.
