How do you feel about rapid rooters? I got a bag of those to try out, and then I’m assuming once the plant is established I can put the hole plug in a basket with clay pellets around it? That was my thought anyways. I don’t have coco
@Hippieryan, what I've done in the past is used rapid rooters in a tray that will accommodate them. (Here's a good thread about staring with RRs) ..What I've also done, and will continue to do, is start seeds in rapid rooters using an Aerogarden which is very similar to using an aerocloner. AGs can be found pretty cheap in craigslist's for sale, or sometimes free, section(s).

I will be checking that out rite now, and also looking up aero gardens? Thanks again for all of your help in this thread and others

'Aerogarden' is the commercial name for the unit. In your CL search for them, you might also want to try a separate search for 'hyrdoponic' because I've seen quite a few of them for sale and they didn't use the word Aerogarden anywhere in their ads. I've actually given away two AGs over the past four years so they do show up for free from time to time.

For starting new seeds, this is a great way. Your best bet bruh, is to take some scissors and start cutting up a few rapid rooters into some SERIOUSLY SMALL pieces. Try to emulate the consistency of coco and use that. You need to be able to clear it from the roots easily. But if it's a seed, just plant it in the rooter, duck tape all around the outside and bottom and let the roots fill it totally. Then a transplant to hydroton is a cinch.

Some little "just add water" pucks are a couple bucks on amazon.
We gave you an easy and cheap thing and you ask about something that costs more and is harder to use.

I am just asking since I have then already? I have tried the pucks and tried rock wool, both where an epic fail, however I got a larger mini green house for seedlings, higher that is. I am hoping to have better success when starting seeds of and moving them to my DWC.
Are you saying you can buy coco pellets that expand? Maybe I already have them and just didn’t know it

Rapid rooters are harder to use for a seed? I am asking not to be a smart ass, I honestly am that ignorant and just don’t know, this was the reason for asking

I've used RR's exactly as you described.
They are designed to hold up in hydro, that is the advantage of them over peat pellets in a hydro setting.
There's a ton of ways to start a seed, the best one is the one that works well for you.
Good luck,

I didnt reply to that at a great time and it came across kinda snarky.
What I was talking about is they sell little pucks of coco that you just add like a cup of water to and they expand into usable coco. Add some perlite to that to loosen the mixture up a bit and youre good to go.
Rooters work, so does rockwool, but there is a learning curve to both of them in keeping the moisture level just right. They require too much attention to be all that practical to me. Putting a seedling with either into a netpot full of hydroton just sucks. The period while the roots grow out and down into the water is pretty miserable imo. Lots of people kill their plants in this stage. If you dont do it just right, the roots will grow out into the netpot and take weeks to reach water or your plug/cube will soak up too much water and drown your plant ect.
I have tried every method of seedling starting and transfer into r/dwc systems that ive been able to find out there. In all of my experimentation and failures, 1 method stood out way above the rest.
coco+perlite in some double layer seed trays with a vented humidity dome. 5-7 days after they pop out of the coco, you pull or dig them up and put them in a cloner to let them grow roots for a few weeks. Once they have like 10" roots you transfer them into the buckets by feeding the roots through a small hole in the bottom of your netpot and gently filling in around them with hydroton. I have a little plastic seedling tool that makes it easy todig up some of the coco around them. Some of them that I pulled earlier, were just a straight down taproot. They were loose enough that you could pick up right up out of the coco with no resistance.
If you already have some rooters, shredding some of them up as @Airwalker16 suggested could work. The perlite mixed in really loosens the mixture up and makes it easy to pull them out though.

Thanks for the reply, that makes perfect sense, I appreciate that

i use rapid rooters for everything. weed to every veggie in my outdoor greenhouse. for weed, since those seeds are a bit more pricey i use something similar to what Just Be described but mine don't have the atttached light. for my veggies, i put the RR's in ice cube trays since i start a bunch of seeds

Arent you doing dtw in coco though? didnt think you were still putting anything in buckets of water.
And they sell cheap plug trays at the walmart lol

oh no, i do dtw waterfarms.

and i have tried those plug trays for the veggies. it seems like i get better results with the RRs.

oh yeah. too many ppl to try to keep track of. lmao.
I just mean to use the trays instead of ice cube trays. They make a few different sizes specifically for rapid rooters.
I tossed all my rooters.

i thought you were talking about the trays that come with a little circle of peat/coco/something. just the empty trays would make my wife not yell at me for using the ice cube trays. lol. i'll have to check out wally world next time.
