New here, had a few questions about filters, LEDS and more.

Hi, firstly glad to be here; i had a few questions, I'm brand new to growing but i want the right info to start off! I have been doing lots of research over the last few days about setting up an indoor grow tent, i have been looking at a 4x4x6.5' tent, however should i rather get multiple smaller tents to separate the grows? e.g. One tent for a mother plant, One tent for Veg/Devlopment, One tent for flowering? if so how big should i look at getting each tent? really only wanted to do 2/4 plants in SCROG method at a time.

Another question of mine is ideally i want filtered air to come in and filtered air to go out, Does a Carbon filter stripe the air of C02? I was reading other forums which believe they don't because c02 molecules are the same size as H2O. Is this correct, because i want to use a carbon filter for air intake and a carbon filter for air exhaust. I'm planning on using 6" Intake and exhaust fan with fan controllers for a 4x4' tent hopefully i can dial in the right amount of fresh air coming in etc.

I wanted to power my grow with 2x400watt LED Grow lights, will this be suitable or too much light for 2/4 plants in a 4x4?

I have not purchased anything yet... i wanted to see what people recommend and what people use for there setups? Should i start with just a 4x4 tent and do one grow at a time to get used to it?

Thanks, looks like a awesome forum!

Thanks for the response. What grow tent sizes would you recommend, for 2/4 plants at a time including the mother plant? Just to confirm i do just leave the mother plant in the VEG Tent, so i doesn't flower, so i can keep taking clones. Any reason why use a HPS light for flowering stage? Heat where i live can be a issue, so if i could stick with a LED light for flower too, would be more ideal. Any LED Lights you could recommend for the flowering stage?

Thanks.

How do U plan to grow these plants? Clone or seed? What medium? What size pots? "haven't purchased anything yet" What is your budget? Can U get everything at once? U should decide between 2 in veg and 2 in flower, or 4 started at same time (My method)? Steady supply of a strain( mother plant ) or choice of strains (seeds)? Decisions, decisions. 10 yrs. ago I started with a 4 plant ghetto grow planning to grow into Tents, filters, etc.. Was so happy with my results that I am still running the same Ghetto Grow in the same shower stall. Although much improved. LOL.

Ill try to answer this the best I can. Your tent sizes are gonba determine size light you need or vice versa. So you need to decide how big of a setup you want then the other questions can be answered. As for a good led for flower im not sure as I dont use them but im sure one of the led guys will chime in. Or ask in the led thread.

Grow Weed Easy does a nice review of LED vs. HPS. They also provide great information on lighting and tents. For a 4x4 tent, you could easily get by with a 600 hps. The good LEDs are expensive, and if you're just a hobbyist the hps provides a much cheaper option. Check out their review here and decide which type of lighting best fits your needs.

Thanks for the replies: @A.K.A. Overgrowem (I own nothing) (Never Grown) (I can buy all at once) (I would like to keep it under 1.5k hopefully get used tents etc, keep my cost down wherever i can) I want to originally plant 5 female seeds and grow 5 plants, 4 of which i want to flower and 1 then i want to Clone, and reuse for another 4 flowering plants, etc over and over. I'm after more of a indica hybrid. (So 5 Plants in one tent for VEG and 4 plants in another for flower; over and over) I also wanted to grow in SCROG if that affects space (But never attach the mother plant to the SCROG). Hope that makes sense and i hope i'm on the right path. Recommendations for tent sizes and lights anything really would be much appreciated.

Just me but to start I would buy a good quality multi spectrum Led Cob light around 200/250 actual watts, a type that can have another 1 or 2 added later to kick up watts, and all the other also needs = pens, soil, perlite, neuts.,small fan, CFL for seedlings, air pots ( 3 gal. or less 2-2.5 about right for 1st timer.) cords, hangers, timers, temp - humid. gage, soil additives, etc., etc., etc.. Order seeds marked easy or beginner (good genes will be plenty dank). I would go with 2 plants the first time. Grow in a closet, bathroom, shower stall, Refrig. box etc.. Crop tops and LST. even on 1st grow, you're aiming for an even canopy. Read the heck out of RIU. there are a zillion things to know. Check the plant problem charts b4 you start. Nitrogen deficiency WILL show up unless you have prepared for it. Get 2 successful grows under your belt. Make future plans at that time. Tents need a lot of thought. Cheap tents aren't good and good tents aren't cheap. Unless a used tent is in new condition I would opt for new. Hope this helps.

You can cheapen out on a small veg tent because it doesn't matter much if it leaks light but you'll want a quality grow tent for bloom phase or even better; build in a section of your basement or similar space with plywood and panda film or Mylar. IMO it's easier to control your conditions with a built in room for flowering but the large size tent you plan to use would be fine albeit expensive. A built in room would also make double filtering easier because you can build in a shelf or something to support it and/or hide it if needed. I have a filter in both my intake and exhaust ducts which cuts stink to a minimum. It works so well I don't bother to filter the exhaust from either of my 2 veg areas. I doubt you'll have much co2 loss through the filters if you seal the room/tent properly.
You might find it easier to simply take clones from plants in veg just before flipping instead of keeping a mother going indefinitely. Either way the power of having multiple grow areas is the key to setting up a perpetual grow. You've got the idea: you only need a small grow area with a cheap tent for clones & seedlings, a slightly larger tent to stage plants before blooming, and then the largest bloom area for your available space. I prefer to use 36" square tents for veg but somewhere close to this size or slightly smaller could also work.
A t5 fixture is great for vegging small plants and small leds are good too but for larger plants I think you need a 400w mh. You want your plants to grow nice tight nodes to support decent size bud & a 400w MH does this very nicely. LEDs IMO are not good enough for flowering unless you drop bank on them. For bloom phase I would go with at least a 600w hid possibly even 2 in that 4' tent or maybe even up to a 1000w if you can afford the giant power bill.
Cheap LEDs are good for side lighting: I use a 600w HPS as my main light and 2 LEDs a 300w panel and a 185w UFO for targeting buds for ripening. IMO even dual 400w LEDs in a 4x4 tent may not be enough to produce the results you want unless you keep them very small and you get very high quality lights. Low power LEDs in my exp cannot penetrate thick canopy but you can aim them to target areas like the lower nugs if you are not using it as your main light source.

2 4x4 tents would be good put mothers and clones in one, flowers in the other put tent in series filter air in the bottom of veg tent duct off the top to lower part of flower tent filter in the top of flower tent out of tents 200 watt cob of cobs in flower and about 400 to 500 of cobs in the flower tent

Hi there, I'm trying to understand why you want/ need filtered air on your intake air....?

I bring in fresh air via fan - no carbon filter and discharge stale air and smell via a fan and carbon filter to outside.
I also recirculate warm air at roof level in room to floor level via a carbon filter and fan which is for odour control.
Good luck with whatever route you go.
