My first grow room build (pix)

Ok. So not much progress but a little.

I just finished building my carbon filter. It tool me about 45 min and I used the following items.

1 stocking
2 pots one slightly smaller than the other (I drilled lots more holes in the sides).
1kg of Active Carbon

I tested it and it restricts my airflow by about 30% (I am not sure how much a factory made one does).Once I get the other fan I will have to decide if I pipe them both to the same filter or if I build another one. Thoughts welcome

I think if I built another filter I would make a few small changes but it seems to work.

One quick question. Can I pull the air through a filter or should it be pushed?

Every setup I have seen has it being pushed through the filter.

you can pull or push .. the only place i really reccomend not pulling is on air cooled hoods because imho pulling hot air thru a fan cant be all that good for the bearings.
other than that pull / push whatever works for ya

Most common practice is to push it through but I haven't ever seen a good reason as to why. Light hoods should be pulled through however because if it is pushed through any leaks in the hood will pump hot air into the room.

It is in about a 2.5 gal pot. I will move it into a 3 or 4 gal pot once the cuttings are bigger. As I only have 1 light in there at the moment I put it in that pot so I can get the light as near to my cuttings as possible. Also I am not too worried about the mother getting root bound as she will be just used for cuttings. (is it ok to not worry about this?

I use 6" pots to start and go to 10" pots after the second set of clones is taken.

[FONT=&quot]Ok. Not as much progress as I wanted this weekend. It’s been raining and I have not had a chance to get outside to cut the doors to size on the flower room. I'm leaving town for a few days for work so will try and finish it all on Thursday.

I have painted the flower box and put in the Mylar.

Ok so I have made some progress and altered my setup a little. I added another 100w CFL to my Veg box and got a smaller hood for my 130w CFL. I finally added a 6" exhaust fan and the temp seems to be running at about 78f. Which is a little higher than I want it to be for this time of year.

I also hung the doors to my flower box. I just need to finish the painting and then I can add my lighting and exhaust ducting.

nice wat you have there in the vege.

Just some good bag seed at the moment and some clones so I can sex. I just got some G13 Northern Lights x Skunk that I will put in soon.

that box looks good man hope the little ones love it

Me too. I just need to add the Mylar now and it's done. Then I can focus all my attention on finishing the flower box.

nice little grow op u got goin on there

Thanks. Still a bit more work to do but its well on its way now. I will never build the cabinets again though. Next time I will just buy some. It took me way too long. I just want it finished so I can focus on the grow.

Ok so I have installed my 250w HPS in the flower room and connected the cool tube to the extraction fan. I am just checking the temps now but have a feeling it will run too hot and I still have another 2 x 100w CFLs to put in. I have decided to ditch my home made carbon filter. When I connect it with all the piping I was not able to move enough air.

Does any one know who much a small professional carbon filter will restrict the air flow of my 6" inline fan? 10% 20% 50%?

hello gadget ! so as i see you have 2 cfl in vega box, right ? it seems like a light that you have is not enough for this girl))) Why do you do not set up one more lamp in vegbox?

Any carbon filter shouldn't restrict your airflow by much at all.
What was your Carbon filter like?

Have you checked out all the DIY carbon filters?
I'm sure you could save yourself a bundle..

Heres a link to a thread I made with a list of Good ones i found on this site and another..

Hope this helps.

I live in Australia and she was outside for the first 3/4 weeks of her life. The weather was miserable as it was winter and she did not get much light. I have 2 CFLs in my box 1 x 130watt 2700 and 1 x 100 watts 6000. She is getting about 18,000 Lumens in a 2' x 2' box, so since she has been in this box she is doing well. All new top growth is nice and tight but the old growth is thin and spread out. I have also taken 6 cuttings from her in the past 2 weeks. So she has taken a bit of a beating.

My carbon filter was ok but air flow restriction was about 30 -40%. If I built it again I am sure I could get this much better by changing the design and getting better quality carbon, but I am thinking of maybe just bighting the bullet and getting a "Odor-Sok" has anyone had any experience using one of these?

PS- Thanks for the link I will check it out. I based my filter of Wolfman Zen’s design.

that exhaust fan should be enough for temps...how is the fan?

Ok.. Just finished my temps check. With my home made filter it's 101 at the top, 92 in the middle and 78 at the bottom of my flower box. Without my filter on the temps are 92 at the top, 84 in the middle and 72 at the bottom. There is no oscillating fan in there at the moment so I am guessing when I get that installed the ambient temp will be around 82-83 without the filter. However it's coming into summer and that will go up so I will need to work on getting my temps down if I want to add the extra 2 x 100 watt CFLs. I might get another 6” inline for the other side.

those are the inline fans from local home depots?

No I got it on ebay. It was not cheep about $48. I think it is an eziAir Inline Fan from memory. I am very happy with it. It's nice and quiet. No louder than an old computer (when the fan is getting a bit old) but pushes much much more air than any pc fan. Don’t know the specs sorry.

I have a Spectrum 6” inline fan in my veg box and it is about 3 times as loud. But you get what you pay for, the Spectrum fan only cost me $19 off ebay.

PS- I am in Australia so its about $1.25 AUD to $1.00 USD

yes ur right its good enough for her. i remember, not so long ago i had 3 lamps 4600k for 4 plants and it seemed very accomodative)))please post some photo, its very iteresting for me
