My 2021 Winter Grow

I won't be travelling for Christmas this year, as such I've started my winter grow a bit sooner than normal

I germinated 5 Blueberry (non-fem/photos) seeds but only two popped.

IMG_1442.JPG

at least they are looking healthy
IMG_1456.JPG

so a week later I started 4 seeds that I brought home from Mexico (Sativa dom, non-fem photos), as I'm thinking of doing some pollen chucking
IMG_1472.JPG

Then I decided that I needed a bit more variety, so 2 weeks later I started 5 Afghani seeds (also non-fem/photos)
IMG_1562.JPG

I had a little set back but the Mexicans recovered well
IMG_1559.JPG

These are the Blueberry plants which are also back on track
IMG_1566.JPG

The happy family in the 4x4 tent with a 600 watt HPS on a 20/4 light schedule....all these plants are in hempy buckets with a soil cap/core

It's a bit of a cluster-fuck as I have plants in 3 stages

The Mexican are being feed GH MaxiBloom, and the others are getting Diablo nutes.

I'll eventually move the best males into a seperate room to mature and provide pollen.

cheers

My plants are coming along, albeit not perfectly but are doing okay.

The Afghani clan (left to right A1 to A5) which are 2 weeks old
IMG_1584.JPG

The Mexican Sativas - quite the variety of sizes.

they are 4 weeks old (left to right M1 to M4)
IMG_1579.JPG

The Blueberry pair - the tall one is not overly healthy as it almost appears to be suffering from over-nutes but I have reduced it's nutes

(left to right BB1 & BB2) which are almost 5 weeks old
IMG_1585.JPG

I revamped the tent to provide a barrier on the cold floor....also added a new tower fan as my previous fan stopped oscillating

I put a 55" TV box of the floor plus a few other boxes to fill in the edges....then put the tent floor mat over it all

The plants are coming along, but I'm not thrilled with the Blueberries

The Afghani bunch ( 3 weeks old), A1 to A4 (left to right) and A5 in the background are doing very well
IMG_1626.JPG

The Mexican Sativas - can't believe the size difference.

One might be inclined to bet that the tall ones are males, but I've grown these before and height is no indicator of gender

M1 to M4 (left to right)
IMG_1624.JPG

The Blueberries - BB1 is looking slightly better but is still not great, it looks over nutrients but yet BB2 gets the same nutes and is doing better

BB1 left, BB2 right
IMG_1633.JPG

I'll be switching to 11/13 on New Year's Day for the Blueberries and Mexican sativas.

I've had issues with these sativas when only going 12/12, thus the extra hour of darkness helps to trigger into flower mode.

The Afghani's will be moved to a seperate grow room to continue with 18/6 under a 315 CMH

Once I have established which are males, I'll move the Afghani females back to the 600 HPS tent and use the 315 CMH grow room for the males.

On New year's day, I moved the Afghanis to another room and have them under a 315 CMH still in veg mode 18/6

Then I reduced my 600 HPS to 11/13 for the Blueberries and the Mexican sativas

I'm pleased with the Afghanis as they are doing very well and they seem to love the new room with the 315 watt CMH

A5 then A1 to A4 (left to right) - they are 4 weeks old
IMG_1654.JPG

IMG_1655.JPG

The Mexican Sativas are coming along, but are showing some yellow leaves already....I really just want the males, might not even grow out a female

M1 to M4 (left to right) they are 6 weeks old
IMG_1643.JPG

The Blueberry plants look like shite, and are not healthy at all...scratching my head as to why
BB1 & BB2 (left to right) they are 7 weeks old

Today, I put the 5 Afghani plants into the 11/13 flower tent...they are doing very well, way better than the others

A1 to A5 (left to right)
IMG_1672.JPG

The Blueberries and Mexicans have been 12 days on 11/13.....the Blueberries showed their gender after a week, where as the Mexican took until today

M1 to M3 are males - only M4 (far right) is female
IMG_1665.JPG

The Blueberry plants........the one on the left is male, the other (right) is female
IMG_1663.JPG

The males (3 Mexicans & 1 Blueberry) have been placed in the 315 CMH bathtub grow room (11/13 hours)
IMG_1675.JPG

The female Blueberry & Mexican remain in the 600 watt HPS grow tent (11/13 hours), plus the 5 Afghani plants (gender pending).

I revamped the male flower room by replacing the 315w CMH with CFL & LED bulbs to reduce the heat.....then I removed the fans

The blueberry dude is maturing much faster than I thought he would..... I need to ensure pollen isn't flying everywhere

IMG_1688.JPG

The 3 male Mexican sativas are about a week behind the Blueberry, as they were slower to show gender
IMG_1687.JPG

a bit crude but it's only males and they don't need much light to mature

The Afghani plants have shown their gender.

2 females
IMG_1691.JPG

3 males - which are the nicest of the bunch
IMG_1695.JPG

so I have a total of 4 females, two Afghanis (shown above), one Blueberry (below) & one Mexican Sativa (next pic)
IMG_1697.JPG

and the one female mexican
IMG_1708.JPG

and the 3 Mexicans males - the 2 tall ones are just shy of 4 feet tall
IMG_1700.JPG

and the one male Blueberry

I cut down the 4 males and saved the pollen sacks, then put the 3 Afghani males into the pollen room

IMG_1727.JPG

So I have 4 females plants left
(left to right) Blueberry - Mexican Sativa and the 2 Afghanis

IMG_1726.JPG

I hate this Blueberry (also the male Blueberry was just as bad) ...ugliest plants I've ever grown
it's so tight as the branches are not spreading out.....this would have been a prime candidate to LST and/or defoliate

IMG_1721.JPG

I'm happy with the Afghanis, just too bad the best ones were males, but these 2 females are very healthy

IMG_1724.JPG

I wasn't even going to grow out these Mexican Sativas, I just wanted males for the pollen, but I'll see what she does

These Afghani males are looking really nice but their days are numbered.

I opened a pollen sack and there was some pollen....will give them a few more days to mature up

I harvested the males for their pollen, so down to 4 female plants....plus my winter sunshine gal

Afghani # 1
IMG_1746.JPG

Afghani # 4

This one started to claw a bit....just not sure why as the others are not doing this
IMG_1747.JPG

Blueberry

It this one fucked up plant....not sure why I'm even keeping it alive
IMG_1755.JPG

The Mexican Sativa

the only reason this one is still alive is because I had so many males and not enough females....so by sheer luck it gets to live
IMG_1751.JPG

This little gal is my winter sunshine gal....with very limited sunshine it it's doing much....but this was just for the fun of it

What an odd bunch of misfits...lol. That clawing is puzzling, are those leaves crispy? Perhaps different strains react differently to nutes.

yes, the Blueberry has crispy leaves that almost look like a cal-mag def....but yet the male Blueberry didn't

that's kind of what I've been thinking, maybe it's just reacting differently to the nutes

I agree that they are an odd bunch of misfits....other than the first Afghani is decent....just need to get the other one to stop clawing

Anyhow....the sunshine gal had a gang-bang, as she's got pollen from every male..I'll wait awhile before the other gals get pollinated

The Afghani plants are doing okay, except the second one still has some clawing, but not getting worst.

We are having a cold snap, as such my night temps are going way too chilly ( ~ 55 to 60 F) which is likely slowing down the growth rate.

I'm not overly happy with this grow, seem nothing is going right

Afghani #1 was the only plant doing well, and now it's leaves are are showing a deep purple, which may be due to the cold, or maybe these Diablo nutes that I'm using for the first time and struggling to dial in

IMG_1782.JPG

Afghani #4 still has clawing, just can't seem to correct it
IMG_1785.JPG

the Mexican sativa should have been topped but I wasn't planning on finishing any females, just wanted males for the pollen
IMG_1788.JPG

then the ugliest plant I've ever grown, almost feel like putting the pathetic thing out of its misery
IMG_1790.JPG

my winter sunshine gal is showing the same issue with dark purple leaves....this one is in soil and I may have applied nutes too often.

I haven't grown in soil for many years now....just forgot you can't give it nutes every feeding like one does for hempy

IMG_1768.JPG

anyhow, I'm going to chuck some pollen on these gals, as they are about 6 weeks from harvest, so I think that's the proper time to pollinate

cheers

I chopped the ugly duckling (Blueberry) as it has been almost 14 weeks since flowering

IMG_1857.JPG

I can't believe how little bud there is.....the cola is on the far right, I've yielded better from solo cups
IMG_1864.JPG

@WattSaver - the roots says it all....typically the root ball fills the entire pot, but not this one, only about half the pot size
IMG_1861.JPG

The Mexican is not ready yet, but sativas always take longer to finish.
IMG_1851.JPG

The Afghani gals still need more time, as they were 2 weeks behind the others
IMG_1852.JPG

IMG_1856.JPG

Then my winter sunshine gal is getting very close....I was considering chopping her but will give her a bit more time
