Modular Scrog CFL Grow.

With my current grow being about 15 days from the finish line, I am starting to look ahead to round 2. After some careful consideration of both the wide array of techniques currently out there and of my limited grow space, I have decided that a mod scrog would be the best way to increase yield and use as much of my growspace as possible. I have never tried scrog before and because of this I have a few questions that I am hoping the RIU community can help me out with.

Basically what I am trying to do is have each plant have its own screen. Since my box is 2' wide and about 1.6' deep, I am thinking of growing four plants, with each of them in a 1 gallon pot, with a 8" x 8" screen above each pot. Pretty much this...

Now my questions are:

1. Should I scrog after the flowering switch growth spurt or before? My vertical space is limited. Knowing whether to scrog before or after the flowering stretch will let me know how tall to make the screens and how tall to grow the plants. On my current grow, my female was switched to flowering when she was 4.5 inches tall and it is now a 17 inch "V" shaped monster xD It almost got out of control and I originally wanted to veg it for 2 more weeks. Thank the cannabis gods I didnt do that. Even though I only topped it. No other techniques were used

2. Could I use a wide, short pot instead of a thin and tall one? I am trying to maximize my vertical space to give the colas plenty of room to grow without running into the lights. Even though I am mainly using two 68W cfl's they still get moderately hot.

Hopefully I get some feedback on this. Expected date to start this project is right after harvest, so around 2/28. Grow on!

NOTE: I got the idea from this thread (https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=124809)

Marijuana roots genrally prefer taller pots as oppose to wide, since they tend to grow down, but I'm sure any pot will work. You may want to consider getting some air-pots or smart pots. 2 gal smart parts are 8.25"x7". You will start to scrog before switching to flower. A good rule of thumb is get the net around 40-60% full before switching to flower. You can switch sooner if you want, it really depends on how much of hurry your in. Decideing when to switch to flower depends on the strain also. Some strains are know to stretch more in flower, others known to stretch less. Obviesly if your strain has a large stretch, you would want to switch to flower a little sooner. Since the idea of a scrog grow is to keep the plants at one height and allow the buds to grow up through it, you can have the net pretty low, but I would advise atleast 8" high and up to max of about 24".
Happy Growing.

So once they start the flowering stretch, what should stretch up would be the bud bearing branches and not the plant itself like what happened to me now with my current plant?

Your comment about roots is INCORRECT! Please dont give advise if you dont know what you are talking about. Maryjane roots with NO limitations will go down roughly 2 feet maybe a little lower and then outward until the plant is done.

No not a bad idea at all. You might have to water a bit more bcuz the soil will dry out faster.

Awesome. Anything that gives me more vertical space is great. This grow I will try to worry a bit less about the vegging plant and more about a healthy, robust root system.

You say I'm wrong and then say roots grow down 2 feet. Doesn't that indicate that the roots prefer taller pots rather than shorter/wider? I do know what I'm talking about or I would not have posted.

Number216, yes the shorter/wider ones will work well. Pot shape genrally comes down to your own specific needs. Short/wide, tall/thin, square/round, doesn't make a huge difference. Use whatever shape works for your grow. As for size, a good rule of thumb is 1 gal. for every 12" of plant.
Happy Growing.

I used a fat short tupperware for my grow, using coco/perlite mix in about a 85/15 ratio. It fit the PC case perfectly, with another container for runoff and allowed for more vertical growth. Plus I planted her towards one end of the container, and LST'd her to grow horizontally lengthwise along the pot. Her roots loved it and when her cycle was over I was able to pull everything out as one mass.

I had drilled holes for drainage in mine, as well as taped up the outside so any roots along the outer edge wouldn't be exposed to light. Worked out great. I'm trying a 2gal smart pot this time around, as I plan to use a larger flowering chamber.
