For my next grow I've decided to run a side by side test of the same genetics in different mediums.

I'll be using Lemon Kush from Herbies and the two mediums are Miracle Gro "Organic" Potting Mix and Re-hydrated Coco with added perlite. Both will be grown in a 3-gallon smart pot but the soil Lemon Kush will be vegged a short time in a jiffy pot filled with coco to develop a root mass before placing her in the soil to avoid burning her as a seedling. The coco Lemon Kush will be fed Dyna-Gro Grow, Dyna-Gro Bloom, and Cal-Mag.

Both will be in a 2x2x5 tent under a 125-W CFL as seedlings and then moving up to a 250W MH for Veg and 250W HPS for Flower. I plan to do my best to keep these girls short and stocky. Once the girls reach their fifth node I want to top once, allow them to recover, apply some LST and then flip to flower.

I already know that if I can keep these plants happy the coco is set to out perform the soil but I'm curious to see if the potting mix can keep up in any way. I'll be updating this thread as well as my grow journal which will have more in-depth details than my updates here will.

Believe it or not, that miracle gro soil isn't half bad. I used it to create all my inground beds this year for veggies and fruit. Everything doing very well.

Personally I would amend the coco with some lime, just so you don't get any PH issues.

i have used them all I feed the shit out of them with nutrients . so to me they are all the same . but I can say I don't like coco . coco to me always seams its to hard to water you have to get it soaked or it will not spread through out the pot almost forced to over water to get it wet .

Too late I think, the pot has been filled and the seed is in the soil.

I'll take pictures tomorrow but I have confirmed the seeds have germinated. Brushed around the top soil and saw the stem bend pushing up through the soil, gently covered for now until she can push her own way up.

The coco seed has popped the soil this morning and is doing fine. I now have her in my tent under a 125w CFL. She has already doubled in size since this morning. I plan to start feeding when she has her third node but does anyone have any other ideas?

not to be that guy, but unless you do multiple grows and understand the strain, feed etc. this won't tell you anything
What guy?

Do you mean I need to do multiple grows at once? I don't get what point you're trying to make.

I've grown once in coco and once in Ocean Forest, so I've picked up a different bag of organic soil because I was curious to see how the Organic Mix from Miracle Gro works compared to coco. I won't have results that could be published in a journal but as far as a dive into personal curiosity and education I feel like I'm taking a step in the right direction by observing the effects of two different mediums on the same genetic strain of cannabis.

While I'm certainly not a master I'm hoping that I can keep the plants dialed into a schedule that will keep that happy and healthy enough for me to see differences if there are any.

Well for not wanting to be that guy you just became that guy lol. Really I don't think this is expected to be a scientific study, just a fun experiment like when as a kid I used to freeze and revive frogs with a battery charger ...... Ok that sounds weird :(. Anywhoo I'm in :).

Love how you try different shit. Wish I could but for me it's all about not fucking around and trying to get as much, as quick as I can. The girlfriend smokes a jar a week if I'm not paying attention, and I don't because it takes me a month to finish a jar and when I go and get a new one its all fucking gone...... sorry stoned and ranting, just went to grab a new jar ...... Fuck :(.

Im dissapointed he didnt start a seed in the miracle grow as well :-(
I was tempted to but my reason for not doing so is I didn't want to burn the seedling. I'd rather it be more established before putting her in the soil. Whenever I start feeding the coco plant I'll be putting the other seedling into miracle grow.

Haha both me and my girl can go through jars when we got them. I think this grow will produce me enough in a quick enough fashion though. Topped once and trained with a super cropping or two and I think I can pull some fat colas if I keep the nutrients balanced.

My latest harvest had great cola structure just I fucked up somewhere. I'm still a newbie as far as I am concerned, I don't feel like I'm quite there yet. REALLY CLOSE but not quite.

I appreciate the compliments though, all you guys are a real big boost on my growing confidence.

It's my fault....I created the monster we call "miss smokes a lot". She didn't smoke till she met me lol. And let me clarify, my jars last longer because I smoke shatter mostly lol.

You can buy Dolomite Lime, and mix it into your watering Regiment. I would do one watering with it right away, then every month. Dolimite lime has a Neutral PH perfect for Cannabis, while coco tends to be acidic, and can lockout alot of nutrients. Give it a try.

Also Coco is a very amazing medium for Organic too. You add in organic fertilizers like kelp meal, aflafla meal, bone meal, green sand. Then you water your plants with an organic tea full of microbes. These microbes break down the Organic stuff you added into the soil, and the plant eats what the bacteria breaks down. In my experience so far (limited), it creates exceptionally healthy plants, with no burning, no discolorations, dark green leaves, and no deficiencies at all.

You can still do this actually, simply by mixing the organic nutes into the top 2 inches of soil. Then building up your soils bacterial/fungal flora. Either using compost tea, or a pre-bought mix. Like great white, or AN Voodoo Juice.
