The political "experts" that the press quoted before the election got it completely wrong, so, I can see how you might be left with this impression. Just a quick check on Google and you'd see that the reporting is quite clear about who voted for whom.
Before the election, polls favored Clinton's win. This idea the polls got it wrong is based on ignorance of what a poll can do. Most of quality sites, like Nate Silver's "538" were giving Trump a 1 in 3 chance to win. Events with odds like that happen a lot, like, a third of the time.
