Looking to buy marshydro LEDs ?help

I just feel bad for the average (non-emotionally invested) Mars-Hydro user. Typically the discussions are more straightforward. T5HO or CMH is a better choice (usable light vs energy used vs up-front cost). Epi-whatever diodes will grow, enjoy your harvest. People are able to not feel like they're being criticized for their purchase. They understand the factors (and that they were fortunate not to get swindled by the big-markup rebrands like Kind, Lush, HydroGrowLED.). They spend about as much on their first light as they would on a boutique "lineup" of nutrients. No big deal.

It's not personal to them.

But, @daillman it's personal. 80w/sq ft for the win. That's great -- for him. We just want to make sure prospective buyers aren't misled by his subjectivity. I hope new growers who own a Mars don't feel ostracized due to his divisiveness.

Bonjour
I run 220w over 12sq/ft...so 18 w sq/ft with my cxb 3590 3500ºk cd @1400mA....so far from 60w sq/ft!
But it is growing very nice buds and vegg very well too!
I am 3/4 weeks to the end...but I bet on 300gr (more if those f.....g spyders were not involve in this grow...and it is not easy to kill with organic products! )
I prefer to pay 380$ for 200w who pull 1.5gpw in soil than 50$ for 0.5gpw(even 0$ my chinese 18x3w 24w bulb are new 4 never used and 2 use 1 month for vegg...it is in a box now in case of...but I will try to sell it..!)

So what brand should we be buying if DIY isn't an option?

Cause from the sound of it, every LED out there is a pile of junk.

This is a serious question. Plug n grow all in one units ready out of the box. No DIY bullshit. What's the best brand for the cost?

I think we're dealing with two issues here.

1. At the epi-whatever price point: T5HO and CMH are better for short or tall grows, respectively. More light, fewer watts, lower price

1a. Exception: The backdoor closeout which Mars Hydro seems to be doing on eBay. When you get down to $63 for 140w actual draw, it becomes a "whatever" choice. It's like someone handing you a box of CFLs for free. Why not? Yeah, they're CFLs. But, being almost free makes up for the energy cost and disposable nature of the light?

2. If an individual has a reason to have more efficiency (less energy cost, less heat to manage?) then:

2a. DIY Cree lightbulbs in a small space, or COB in large? (Maybe COB in small space would work. I think the Cree lightbulbs are a valid DIY alternative, but less DIY. Maybe SMD5630 strips too. But, nobody's demonstrated that yet.).

2b. Non-epi (pre-made) fixtures.

You're asking about 2b. I just want to clarify the topic so we're not talking past each other.

I believe most people who buy Mars Hydro do not care about efficiency (energy cost nor heat management). Not only do they not want to DIY, but they don't want to pay for efficient LED (2b). In their case, they would be better off with T5HO or CMH (just cost/benefit calculation. Although, the backdoor eBay deals throw a wrench into that calculus.).

Now, for people who make it this far (2b), I recommend Area-51 LED. I've been gone for awhile, so I'm not up on the other lights of similar merit. (I'm stuck on DIY Cree lightbulbs. I want to test SMD5630 sometime, if I can get motivated.). I'm sure others can add brands here (2b).

I think it's important to distinguish those classes of purchasers, otherwise we're talking past each other. The people who don't care about efficiency will say "why should I spend $800 on a light that cost me $400?"

That's where the point gets lost: the $400 light could be $300 and produce less heat and smaller electricity bills. The question to ask is: why did you choose LED instead of those more effective, non-LED options?

Okay so if you have a Grand to drop on a light go ahead get the CREE. Most people dont, the happy medium is Platinum LED. The company is based out of the USA, 5 Year warranty, I'd pick that over a mars Cree. just for the warranty. If im dropping over a grand , better have a 5 year.

platinum is a chinese import. the owners or their marketing people are deceptive swindlers. it is not any or very slightly better than mars. the light is inefficient,
expensive for the shitty components it uses
finally platinum has been called out over and over again for the outright theft of advance's respected name.
that 5 year warranty is a joke those lights are old tech now in 5 years platinum will be a forgotten bad name and that tech will be creaking louder than it is now. your like the other guy defending what you have no clue about.

the very best pled growers ger 1gpw with huge veg periods. that sucks.

You have your mind made so im not going to argue, I've seen side by side grows and I've seen the lights on side by side. so dont tell me there isnt anything different about em. they may be the same tech, so what. Im not dropping a fucking grand on a light. 1 GPW sounds fine by me.

Platinum is a shameless name-ripoff of the reputable AdvancedLED. They used Advanced's product photos. Not sure what they're doing now. But, about a year ago it was an obvious name-ripoff.

Why not spend the money on T5HO or CMH and get more light for less energy?

When a person just chooses to do LED because they want to do LED, I guess it doesn't matter what they buy. But, if I were going to by epi-whatever just for the experience, I wouldn't patronize Platinum name-ripoff. That's some sketchy stuff.

Im in a 4x4x8 dude, once i get my room ill be all for that shit. no use for me spending over a grand on a 1kw replacement when I dont have enought room for the plants. i'm supplementing HID because I want yield. theres a time and place for everything. big area, go cob or cree, if your in a tent, why waste your money.

I had no idea about the rip off, but usually when it comes to business you either have your shit patented or you're a moron.

That light is $539 for 200w. If you had looked at one of the lights recommended, such as Area-51, you would have seen that you could buy 270w for the same price. And, they would be individual sources -- meaning you could spread them out and get more coverage. And a lifetime warranty.

I'm increasingly convinced some of you guys are not trying to understand this topic.

I get the impression the Platinum guy walked a very fine line. He didn't call his business Advanced. He called it Platinum. He called the lights Advanced and then used the same product photos.

The real (reputable) AdvancedLED names its products Diamond (etc). So, it's a very subtle (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

IMO, that's entirely antithetical to 420. If Platinum can't compete on its own merits, there's no reason to buy one. If it has to stoop to confusing the consumer, that's even worse.
