Lighting question... Which produces more?

Would 2 400watt HPS in a 4x4 area be better than 1 600? What about just the 400?

I was going to upgrade soon, and was going to veg in a 3x3 flower in a 4x4.. What light should I use for the 3x3 if im using 2 400's for flower?

What yields could be expected from that?

Hey Mystery,

This is my first useful post here...but I guess that it would be for you to decide if my stuff is useful or not.

The 400 is a bit too small for a 4 x 4. A 3 x 3 with small plants would be pretty good for a 400.

If you are growing tall plants, taller than 3' for example, go with the 600. The penatration is greater with the 600. The 400 will only go maybe 18" into the plant or so.

If your doing a SOG or a SCROG with small plants, maybe 2" tall or so, you can go either way. But, I think the two 400s would give more yeild.

Forgot your yield question. Since your asking this Q I assume you are new to growing. As a new grower, you should be thrilled to hit 0.5 grams per watt of HID light. that would be about 10 oz from a 600W light.

I've seen peeps doin 1.5 grams per Watt. Not me though, the gods have not yet smiled on me to that extent.

better penetration with the 600, i think you will have heat issues with 2 400's in that small of a space unless you cool them real well. why dont you get a 1000, thats what would idealy go over a 4x4. deepest penetration, highest lumens, easier to cool than 2 lights. i would definetly go 1000 if i were you.

it all depends on your ventilation and how well its cooled. a good ruul is if you can comfortably hold your hand at canopy level your good. if its hot, raise the light. when i ran 1000's i could get mine 10-12" above the canopy w/o burning. i was well cooled with fans blowing across my canopy though.
