have you considered the third option?
4 1000's on 240 voltage. all you need is new breakers new receptacle sockets check the gauge of wire also (only if your house breaker box has no 240) running 1000 digital ballast at 120v they average about 8.8 to 9.4 amps. On 240 voltage the same 1000 w lights are now 4.8 to 5.4 amps.
At this point I'm pretty sold on the LEDs. May try a G8 600 in the 4x4 tent as the DIY have to be assembled and I want to test with a plug n play

If it were me, I would go with 4x 600w cool tube design with a large reflector Each pair hooked up to a 750cfm carbon filter and 440cfm fan exhausting through the lights then outside. You are going to need a scrubber anyway, so why not run it through the lights. With tents, it's all about air flow, imo. With proper air flow, you can keep the temp inside the tent within 1-3 degrees of the temp outside the tent. I'm a big fan of LED's and COB's, but personally, I don't see anything wrong with HID's and they are cheap, cheap to replace and proven effective. Lots of other expenses too like fans, filters, medium, etc. I guess it all really depends on what your budget is. Good luck to you!

I know the man is set on LED's so it doesnt matter but... Its for a 10x10 tent. Should be using a controller & stealing it from the dryer plug, or box. Depends on the location.

You have any personal experience with the cooltubes? I just ordered XXL hoods for my 10x10, and have never used a cool tube before. Figured a hood would reflect much better and Im runnign 1k's, not 600's. Why would you run two scrubbers? Never heard of that tbo...

Can't wait to see your setup all fired up. Wish I had the money for LED's, but thats not too far away...

Waiting to hear back quotes from some DIY COB companies. In the mean time I've been looking at pre-built LEDs. Might get a $600 600w to test in the 4x4, and if it performs well possibly just buy 3 more panels to form the 10x10 running only about 1600w actual all together.
600watt means 6pcs of cobs right?
I'm also using cob panel. I only use it about 50% of its wattage. I thought that's how they run cobs? Correct me if I'm wrong

I have done two run with cobs
10x5 tent with two 600watt cobs and one 600watt hps.
I wanted to do all led, but the panel weight around 15 pounds. I'm not sure the tent going hold that. Sure don't want those expensive lights drop on floor...
Anyways, I like cobs sure it is the future.

im also considering 10 by 10 tent for my new grow, but afraid I can not handle by myself. Would like to see how you setup your tent. Are you using any kind of A/C?
Sealed room with extra co2?

Happy grow

Yes, I have 2x 600w cool tubes in my 4x8 tent. I have tried just closed hoods, but they would not stay cool enough so I went back to the cool tubes, but I would like the cool tubes with the xxl reflectors. I'm not a huge fan of them or anything, just that they work in regards to removing heat from a small space like a tent.
I guess you could go with one larger say 750 cfm fan hooked up to an equal or larger carbon filter with a Y adaptor so you could cool each pair of hoods. I would basically double my setup with larger reflectors is what I'm really saying.

The scrubber is behind the lights, you can see the fan. It goes filter > Lights > exhaust out of tent and out the window. I just want bigger reflectors. Those are 6" tubes, if you went with 1000w, I would go with the 8" tubes. I've never ran COB's or LED as a disclosure. HID's are cheap and effective so that's why I went that route.

Blackforest, I have never used the cooltubes...

How much cooler are they than hoods do you think? What is the light spread like on them? Looks like we will be running x2 of your setups now. We lost out on the rental we were suppose to have with a garage so my plants are out the window. We looked at a new place yesterday but due to the way that the power is setup the whole plan is fubar.

It's going to have to be x2 4x8's on a flip setup due to the wiring. Only real option now is the 600's as I'm not going to have space for a portable ac in each tent. I have 2 separate 15 amp breakers I can utilize so Ill put 1 600w ballast on each and split all the fans equally between the 2 breakers. I already ordered the XXL hoods (42.5"x30"x9.5") but they were only an extra $90 per ballast to upgrade. The do have the cooltube with the reflector (30"x25"x7") which is $60 cheaper per light so Im really interested in your feedback...

Sorry for the slight highjack of the thread OP.

i had a 400 hps in a big square hood, the whole thing got hot by the end of the day, even with the fan pulling through it, replaced it with a cool tube, the tent is about 8 to 10 degrees cooler at the end of the day. if you get the big reflector wing for them, they seem to do just as good as the big hood

I can't be specific on the hood vs the tubes temp wise, but I tried the hoods for 1 day and went back to the tubes because they would keep the temps the lowest. As for the light spread, I just have the 2 tubes and don't forget the tent is 99% reflective and I've had good results, but would like the ones with the larger reflector. I've been using tents for a long time and it takes awhile to get everything dialed in working well. Just remember, the goal is to keep the temp in the tent within a couple degrees of the temp of the room the tent is within. I just open all the flaps at the bottom of the tent and run a 440 cfm fan 24/7 and it works very well.
