This is always a problem and I feel your pain. The box will say if they light is soft white, cool white, day lighte etc...
soft white is what you want for flowering, more reddish light.
cool white and day light bulbs put out more light towards the blue end of the spectrum.

when the bulb is lit in a dark area from a distance it will seem either white,blue,or red.

not that i would ever use a cfl to grow.!!
But I did look in the shops (uk) and some dont even say what K they are or anything about being soft white, cool white ect
Which is why I said you would have to test it to find out what type it is.!!

It your shopping at Wal-Mart, they have 26w 6500K (Daylight) bulbs. They are clearly market on the box. I veg with CLF and use them to supplement my HPS setup for flowering. I bought my 6500K at Wal-Mart, and my 2700K (42w) at Home Depot.
IMHO, if it does not say the color, keep walking. They are plenty out ther which do. Many at Wal-Mart do not, but one brand has them clearly marked on the outside of the box.
Without them being marked your only dealing with guess work.

someone should do a growing supply delivery service via fedex.

That is also the case in the US. If you come across a package that doesn't say what type of light it is, it is more than likely soft white or around 3000K. Soft white gives out light that is very similar to the typical incandescent bulb. Since most people buy these for replacement bulbs, they sometimes don't write any description on the box.
Ohh and by the way, cfl's are very useful for veg because you only need about 80% less light for veg than for flowering. Most people that use HID's for veg are using way too much light. A bit of waste....
